Radio Journalist/Producer

U Multicultural is a community-driven media organization, TV and FM radio broadcaster based in Winnipeg. We produce television, radio and digital content serving multicultural and Indigenous communities across Manitoba.

We are looking for an experienced Radio Journalist / Producer who can work independently and take ownership of the full production process from story development through final broadcast.

IMPORTANT: This is not an entry-level position

This position is intended for a ready-to-work media professional, not someone seeking to learn the fundamentals of journalism or broadcasting on the job.

The successful candidate must already have the core professional skills required to research, develop, report, write, record, edit and produce radio content with minimal day-to-day supervision.

Training will be provided on U Multicultural's specific systems, workflows and procedures. However, applicants must already be capable of performing the core responsibilities of the position independently.

Key Responsibilities

- Research, pitch and develop original story ideas relevant to multicultural and Indigenous communities.
- Conduct interviews with community members, leaders, experts and other stakeholders.
- Prepare interview questions and conduct professional on-air and recorded interviews.
- Write, edit and produce radio news stories, features, interviews and community segments.
- Record and edit high-quality audio using appropriate broadcast and editing techniques.
- Prepare scripts, introductions, voiceovers and other broadcast materials.
- Verify information, names, dates, quotations and other factual details before publication or broadcast.
- Follow professional journalistic standards of accuracy, fairness, balance and integrity.
- Monitor current affairs, community issues and relevant local developments and identify stories of public interest.
- Meet production deadlines and manage multiple assignments independently.
- Maintain organized production files and ensure completed content is properly prepared for broadcast.




- Maintain and update the weekly radio programming schedule.
- Support community sessions and other production activities for the TV channel when required.
- Work professionally with guests, community organizations, contributors and members of the public.
- Follow U Multicultural's editorial policies, workplace procedures and management direction.
- Take responsibility for assigned projects from initial idea through completion.

Required

- Post-secondary education in Journalism, Broadcasting, Communications or a related field, or equivalent qualified experience.
- At least 2 years of relevant professional experience in journalism, radio, broadcasting, reporting or media production.
- Demonstrated experience producing radio or broadcast-quality content.
- Strong news writing, scriptwriting and editing skills.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct professional interviews.
- Experience with audio recording and editing software such as Adobe Audition, Audacity or equivalent.
- Strong attention to accuracy, spelling, names, dates and factual details.
- Ability to independently research, develop and complete stories.
- Ability to manage deadlines and multiple assignments without constant supervision.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Professional judgment and the ability to make appropriate editorial decisions.
- Fluency in English.

Assets

- Experience working in community media, multicultural media or Indigenous media.
- Knowledge of Winnipeg and Manitoba communities.
- Knowledge of Indigenous and multicultural issues in Canada.
- Additional language skills.
- Experience with television, video production or digital media.
- On-air broadcasting experience.




- Experience working with studio or field recording equipment.

Compensation & Benefits

$23.00–$25.00 per hour, based on qualifications and experience.

Benefits are available after the probationary period, subject to eligibility and organizational policy.
