About Renew and the Role

Renew Child and Youth Homes provides small-setting, home-style residential support for children and youth in Pickering. We are seeking an experienced Child and Youth Worker who is dependable, collaborative and able to remain calm and professional when emotions are high. The successful applicant will be a team player who contributes to a positive workplace culture and participates in staff meetings, training and team-building activities.

This is an active, relationship-based role, not passive supervision.

The position is expected to average approximately 10 to 12 hours per week, with scheduling based on the needs of the home and the successful applicant’s availability.

Responsibilities

The Child and Youth Worker will:

- Develop secure, respectful and appropriately boundaried relationships with children and youth.
- Build trust patiently with young people who may be cautious, guarded or reluctant to engage with a new staff member.
- Support individualized Plans of Care, safety plans, goals and clinical recommendations.
- Assist with meals, school routines, homework, appointments, recreation, family contact, bedtime and other daily transitions.
- Recognize changes in behaviour, mood, routines or functioning and communicate relevant observations to the team.
- Remain calm and professional when children or youth are distressed or emotions are high.
- Respond to conflict and challenging situations using approved prevention, intervention and de-escalation approaches.
- Support emotional regulation, problem-solving, healthy decision-making and relationship repair.
- Coach practical life skills, including meal preparation, organization, communication, household responsibilities and community participation.
- Promote each child or youth’s dignity, rights, voice, identity, culture, beliefs and important relationships.
- Complete clear, objective and timely daily notes, incident reports and other required documentation.
- Communicate professionally with supervisors, placing agencies, families, schools, clinicians and other members of the support team.




- Work collaboratively with colleagues and contribute to a consistent approach across shifts.
- Accompany children and youth to school, appointments, family contact, activities or community outings when assigned.
- Contribute to the everyday operation of the home, including meal preparation, tidying, laundry and maintaining a welcoming environment.
- Participate in staff meetings, training, reflective supervision, planning discussions and team-building activities.
- Follow applicable legislation, Ministry requirements, reporting obligations, RCYH policies and professional standards.

Qualifications

Applicants must have:

- A diploma or degree in Child and Youth Care, Child and Youth Work, Social Service Work, Developmental Services Work, Behavioural Science, Psychology, Social Work or a closely related field.




- At least two years of direct experience supporting children or youth with complex emotional, behavioural, developmental, mental health or family-related needs.
- Experience in a staffed residential home, treatment setting, child welfare program, youth justice service, developmental service or similarly intensive environment.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed, relational and strengths-based approaches.
- Experience with crisis prevention, de-escalation and professional boundary-setting.
- Strong written communication skills and experience completing professional case notes or incident documentation.
- The ability to understand and follow individualized plans, safety procedures and reporting requirements.
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR certification, or the ability to obtain certification before beginning independent shifts.
- A valid Ontario driver’s licence and reliable transportation.
- The ability to provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check, professional references and verification of education and certifications.
- Legal authorization to work in Canada.
- Experience supporting children or youth with developmental disabilities, autism, FASD, mental health needs or child welfare involvement is considered an asset.
- Recognized crisis-prevention training is also an asset.

Available Shifts

Applicants must clearly identify the days and shifts they are reliably available to work:

- Day: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Evening: 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
- Overnight: 11:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.
