Neurosciences units at University of Alberta Hospital is one of a kind within Alberta Health Services that provides specialized care that includes the management of acute strokes, brain injuries, brain tumors, spinal cord injuries and other neurological issues. This is a RN float position and the acute neuroscience/neurosurgery RN works to full scope of practice providing nursing care for patients and families. This is done within a team-forward environment that prides itself in the multidisciplinary collaboration amongst NP’s, LPN’s, HCA’s, MD’s, OT, PT, and SW, dietician and pharmacist. As such, a robust commitment to teamwork is reflected in our daily practice which relies on excellent inter-professional communication. Neurosciences ward units provide advancement opportunities including care required during insertion and/or management of drains, acute management of patients experiencing a stroke, spinal cord injuries and/or other acute neurological issues. As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. As a Registered Nurse (RN),

Upon obtaining a full practice permit, the rate of pay will be adjusted to the applicable Registered Nurse rate in accordance with UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii), as applicable.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification. If you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse within the last five (5) years, you must complete the following free courses: CRNA Medication Management (Chapters 1-4), available at https://connect.nurses.ab.ca/home/learning-and-development/learning-modules/ and the NextGenU Health Assessment Resources Certification, available at https://courses.nextgenu.org/course/view.php?id=271.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Physical capability to perform all aspects of the role, including lifting, pulling and pushing up to 50 lbs. Basic computer skills required. Strong leadership and critical thinking skills, demonstrated by the ability to direct other healthcare workers, problem solve and escalate clinical concerns in a timely and appropriate manner. Strong communication and organizational skills. Commitment to patient and family-centered care. Demonstrated ability to maintain collaborative working relationships with patients, families, and team members. Successful applicants will undergo Neuroscience Orientation classes to enter the program. 1 to 2 years of Neuroscience experience within the last 5 years. Experience managing post-operative neurosurgical patients, spinal sign assessments, and complex stroke patients.

Preferred Qualifications:

1 to 2 years of Acute Care experience preferred. Connect care related experience preferred. Charge Nurse experience preferred within the last 2-3 years.
