Contract Duration: Up to Three (3) Years

Work Location: Hybrid – Toronto, Ontario (TTC Offices, Project Sites, and Remote)

Position Summary

The Electrical Consultant provides senior-level electrical engineering expertise in support of the design, review, construction, commissioning, and delivery of transit infrastructure projects. Reporting to the Chief Engineer – Electrical, the incumbent serves as a technical advisor responsible for ensuring electrical systems and designs meet applicable engineering standards, regulatory requirements, operational needs, and TTC design criteria.

The role supports a broad portfolio of capital projects involving subway stations, traction power substations, bus garages, maintenance facilities, administrative buildings, and other transit infrastructure. The Electrical Consultant collaborates with multidisciplinary engineering teams, consultants, contractors, project managers, operations, and maintenance staff to provide practical engineering solutions throughout the project lifecycle.

The successful candidate combines extensive technical knowledge with strong project coordination, stakeholder engagement, constructability assessment, and commissioning experience to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and in accordance with quality, schedule, and budget expectations.

Key Responsibilities

Electrical Design Review

- Review electrical engineering designs, drawings, specifications, calculations, and technical submissions for transit infrastructure projects.
- Ensure engineering designs comply with applicable codes, standards, TTC design criteria, and industry best practices.
- Verify technical accuracy, completeness, constructability, maintainability, and operational suitability of proposed electrical systems.
- Evaluate engineering deliverables prepared by consultants, contractors, and third-party organizations.
- Provide recommendations to improve design quality, reliability, safety, and lifecycle performance.

Engineering Support

- Provide technical guidance throughout planning, design, procurement, construction, testing, commissioning, and project close-out.
- Support engineers during feasibility studies, design development, detailed engineering, and project implementation.
- Assist in preparing engineering reports, technical memoranda, studies, and recommendations.
- Provide engineering advice on complex electrical systems and infrastructure challenges.

Site Assessments & Existing Conditions

- Conduct field investigations and site inspections to verify existing conditions.
- Assess electrical infrastructure, equipment, and installations.
- Identify deficiencies, operational issues, constructability concerns, and safety risks.
- Collect field data required to support engineering design and documentation.
- Verify existing drawings against actual site conditions.

Construction Support

- Provide engineering support during construction activities.
- Respond to Requests for Information (RFIs) from contractors.
- Review contractor work for compliance with approved drawings and specifications.
- Assist in resolving field engineering issues.
- Participate in construction coordination meetings.




- Provide technical recommendations regarding construction sequencing and implementation.

Commissioning & Testing

- Support commissioning activities for high-voltage and low-voltage electrical systems.
- Witness testing and commissioning of electrical equipment and systems.
- Verify installation quality and operational readiness.
- Review commissioning documentation and test results.
- Assist with system acceptance and project turnover activities.

Shop Drawing & Technical Submittal Review

- Review contractor shop drawings.
- Evaluate product data and material submissions.
- Verify compliance with contract documents and engineering requirements.
- Ensure submitted equipment satisfies project specifications.
- Recommend acceptance, revisions, or rejection of submitted documentation.

Constructability Reviews

- Evaluate engineering designs for constructability.
- Identify opportunities to improve installation efficiency.
- Recommend design modifications that reduce construction risks.
- Review sequencing and access requirements.
- Assess maintenance accessibility and long-term operational considerations.

Technical Documentation

Prepare, review, and maintain:

- Engineering reports
- Technical specifications
- Design review comments
- Site inspection reports
- Commissioning reports
- Deficiency reports
- Engineering calculations
- Technical correspondence
- Project documentation
- Design recommendations

Stakeholder Coordination

Collaborate with:

- Engineering teams

Transit Infrastructure Support

Provide engineering support for:

- Administrative Facilities
- Transit Infrastructure Upgrades
- Capital Improvement Projects

Regulatory Compliance

Ensure compliance with:

- Ontario Electrical Safety Code
- Ontario Building Code
- Canadian Electrical Code (where applicable)
- Occupational Health & Safety legislation
- TTC Engineering Standards
- Transit industry standards
- Electrical safety procedures
- Environmental regulations

Project Support

Support project teams by:

- Reviewing project schedules
- Monitoring engineering deliverables
- Coordinating engineering reviews
- Participating in design meetings
- Supporting procurement activities
- Providing technical risk assessments
- Identifying engineering issues requiring resolution
- Supporting successful project delivery

Health, Safety & Risk Management

- Promote a strong safety culture.
- Identify electrical hazards and operational risks.
- Participate in safety reviews.
- Support safe work planning.
- Ensure compliance with electrical safety requirements.
- Participate in site safety meetings.




- Follow TTC safety policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Education

Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in:

- Electrical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering Technology
- Power Systems Engineering
- Related Engineering Discipline

Experience

Minimum 15 years of progressively responsible experience in industrial and commercial electrical engineering or electrical construction.

Experience should include:

Working Conditions

Pay: $100.00-$160.00 per hour
