Shape the Next Generation of Healthcare Support Professionals

The Maritime College is seeking an experienced and dedicated Medical Device Reprocessing Technician (MDRT) Program Instructor. This role offers an excellent opportunity for healthcare professionals who are passionate about infection prevention, sterile processing, and educating the next generation of MDRT practitioners.

As an Independent Contractor, you will provide engaging classroom instruction, support student success, and ensure graduates are prepared for employment in hospitals, surgical centres, clinics, and other healthcare facilities.

About the Role

The MDRT Program Instructor is responsible for delivering course content aligned with industry standards in medical device reprocessing, facilitating hands-on and theoretical learning, evaluating student performance, and ensuring compliance with applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements.

Key Responsibilities

- Deliver high-quality instruction in assigned MDRT Program courses.
- Prepare lesson plans, presentations, assignments, and assessments aligned with industry standards.
- Facilitate classroom and lab-based practical learning activities, including decontamination, sterilization, and instrument handling procedures.
- Evaluate student assignments, skills demonstrations, examinations, and practical competencies.
- Provide timely, constructive feedback and academic support to students.
- Maintain accurate attendance, grading, and academic records.
- Ensure strict adherence to infection prevention and control (IPAC) principles and safety protocols.
- Foster a professional, supportive, and safety-focused learning environment.
- Participate in curriculum development and program enhancement as required.
- Ensure compliance with College policies, MDRT standards, and applicable provincial and healthcare regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

Program-Specific Qualifications





Required:

- Certification as a Medical Device Reprocessing Technician (MDRT) or equivalent credential (e.g., CSA-compliant sterile processing certification).
- Minimum 2–3 years of recent experience in medical device reprocessing, sterile processing, or hospital CSSD/OR support services.
- Strong knowledge of sterilization techniques, infection prevention, instrumentation care, and healthcare safety standards.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and learning management systems or digital instructional tools.

Preferred:

- Previous teaching, training, mentoring, or clinical instruction experience.
- Experience working in hospitals, surgical centres, or acute care environments.
- Familiarity with CSA standards (including sterilization and decontamination guidelines).
- Adult education or instructional design experience.
- Membership in relevant healthcare or sterile processing professional associations.

Instructor Qualifications & Registration Requirements

To be eligible for instructor registration with the Nova Scotia Private Career Colleges Division, applicants must meet one or more of the following criteria:

- A Bachelor’s degree in a related field and at least one (1) year of industry experience; or
- A college diploma or certificate in a related field and at least two (2) years of industry experience; or
- A Bachelor of Education degree or valid Nova Scotia teaching certificate and at least two (2) years of industry experience; or
- A minimum of five (5) years of directly related occupational experience; or




- Equivalent qualifications recognized for specialized or emerging occupations.

Additional Requirements

- Must be eligible for instructor registration under Nova Scotia Private Career Colleges regulations.
- Applicants may be required to provide proof of education, certifications, and industry experience.
- Instructors with less than one (1) year of teaching experience in a formal evaluative setting must complete an approved Instructional Methods or Train-the-Trainer program within the provincially required timeframe.
- Additional program-specific certifications in infection prevention and control may be required.

Contract Details

- 15-Month Independent Contractor Agreement (60 Weeks)
