Are you a skilled concrete finisher who takes pride in building and maintaining the infrastructure that keeps a city moving? We’re looking for Concrete Finishers to join the City of Victoria's Engineering & Public Works team.
In this hands‑on role, you will help construct and repair sidewalks, curbs, gutters, driveways, and other municipal infrastructure. From reading grades and setting forms to placing and finishing concrete, you will play a direct role in delivering the public works projects that residents rely on every day.
Responsibilities
- Prepare sites for concrete work, including sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and driveways; read and interpret engineering plans and grade sheets to determine the location of underground services and utilities; set up traffic control; act as padman to direct the operation of construction and excavation equipment.
- Calculate grades and alignments from grade sheets and control points; construct wooden forms; set metal pins and arms to control the alignment of the curb extruder.
- Place concrete by shovelling and levelling; finish with trowel, broom and edger; determine, prepare and apply chemical retardants and curing compounds; finish exposed aggregate concrete by applying chemicals, brooming and washing surfaces, and using techniques such as stamping.
- Install and finish catch basins, castings, boxes, interlocking paving bricks, tiles and sleeves; apply surface cleaning and finishing treatments such as acid washes and sealers.
- Operate hand and power equipment such as shovels, jackhammers and concrete saws; operate Bobcat‑type loaders as required; operate a vehicle to transport equipment and materials.
- Perform related duties as qualified.
Independence
Work is assigned and reviewed by a supervisor.
Problems are referred to the supervisor.
Working Conditions
- Physical Effort: Build forms, place and finish concrete (frequent); operate jackhammers, cut‑off saws, plate tampers and compactors (occasional).
- Mental Effort: Normal.
- Visual/Auditory Effort: Normal.
- Work Workplace: Work outside in all weather conditions (continuous); exposure to equipment noise (often); work on construction sites (continuous); work in moving traffic (occasional).
Key Skills and Abilities
- Understand and apply concrete construction and finishing techniques.
- Use hand tools, instruments and operate power equipment.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, utility information sheets and grade sheets.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Operate equipment safely.
Qualifications
Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification
- High school graduation.
- Current and valid class 5 B.C. Driver’s licence.
Experience
- 2 years of experience in concrete construction and finishing, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Other
- May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
