Detailed Overview

In accordance with the B.C. College of Social Workers standards of practice and Fraser Health mission, values, and reporting to the Skilled Practice Leader, the Clinical Supervisor is responsible for the day‑to‑day supervision of social work activities and staff for the assigned section. The role involves monitoring workload, preparing and adjusting work assignments, ensuring staff training objectives are attained, and acting as a clinical resource. In collaboration with the Professional Practice Leader, the supervisor assists with budget planning and monitoring, prepares and conducts performance appraisals, provides input into service goals and objectives, and maintains quality and safety standards for the assigned section. The supervisor also contributes to the development of the social work profession through participation in approved practice councils and site/regional committees, and carries a clinical caseload as required.

Responsibilities

- Supervise day‑to‑day social work activities for the section, ensuring operational requirements are met and optimal use of staff resources is achieved; prepare staff work schedules and assignments and adjust according to workload. Ensure staffing levels are adequate to handle anticipated workload, report concerns to the Professional Practice Leader, and maintain workload measurements/statistics.
- Supervise designated staff; plan, provide, and coordinate staff training and orientation, monitor staff performance, and in collaboration with the Professional Practice Leader, write and conduct performance appraisals and recruit/make recommendations for new staff selection.
- Act as a clinical resource within the section by providing clinical advice, supervision and guidance to staff, facilitating resolutions to complex situations, and helping overcome barriers to care delivery.



Identify ethical concerns, guide staff through ethical decision‑making processes, and seek additional consultation as needed. Assess, identify, and communicate risks and challenges to the Professional Practice Leader.
- In collaboration with the Professional Practice Leader and for the section, develop and maintain clinical practice reference manuals, policies and procedures, and implement clinical practice, regulatory, accreditation, and Fraser Health social work acute care standards; participate in quality and safety activities by monitoring the effect of clinical practice changes, and provide evaluation and recommendation for new or revised policies, procedures and Fraser Health social work acute care standard.
- Provide input into service goals and objectives; collaborate with clinical areas that receive social work services; in collaboration with the Professional Practice Leader, provide recommendations for improvement.
- Assist in the preparation of operating and capital budget, make recommendations on budget requirements, and monitor expenditures for the section. Report and justify variances and provide recommendations for remedial action.
- Provide student supervision and evaluation; coordinate student practicum learning activities and practicum experiences.
- Oversee the ongoing monitoring, calibration and upgrade of equipment and supplies; maintain supplies and inventory of equipment for the section.
- Collaborate with other social work supervisors across Fraser Health to strive for practice standardization.
- Participate in research of new equipment/supplies and provide related recommendations.
- Participate in approved social work and inter‑professional research, special projects, and committees including practice councils and clinical decision support tool development.
- Assume a clinical caseload as required; assess, plan, implement and evaluate treatment of assigned patients.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience

Current full registration with the B.C. College of Social Workers.

Master's Degree in Social Work from an accredited school of Social Work.

Three (3) years of recent and relevant social work experience including one (1) year of supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

- Knowledge of social work standardized tests, measures, use of equipment and related techniques.
- Knowledge of applicable legislations and ability to interpret, apply and communicate legislation impact.
- Effective listening and consensus building skills that promote communication and lead to a cooperative approach to problem solving within interdisciplinary settings.
- Knowledge of other health care professions and their role in patient care.
- Ability to supervise, provide work direction and guidance to others, and provide effective performance evaluation.
- Ability to allocate staff assignments to meet program requirements using available resources.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to teach, coach, provide and coordinate staff and student education and orientation.
- Ability to organize, document and communicate clinical practice policy and procedures.
- Ability to prioritize, problem solve, coordinate workflow, and carry a clinical caseload as required.
- Ability to monitor operating and capital budgets.
- Ability to support evidence‑based research including identifying research questions and promoting research opportunities.
- Ability to operate related equipment including relevant software applications.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
