WHAT THE ROLE IS ALL ABOUT!
Reporting to the Vice President, Pre‑Construction, the Estimator will focus on analyzing and interpreting tender documents to prepare detailed quantity take‑offs, execution plans, and cost estimates for heavy civil construction projects. The Estimator will play a key role in developing project execution strategies by evaluating construction sequencing, logistics, resource requirements, schedule constraints, and site‑specific risks. Working closely with Operations, Project Management, and field leadership teams, the Estimator will help define how projects will be successfully delivered, ensuring estimates reflect practical and efficient construction approaches. This position will be in our Winnipeg, MB office.
ESSENTIAL CONTRIBUTIONS WE NEED FROM YOU!
- Project Estimation: Prepare detailed quantity calculations and cost estimates for heavy civil construction projects, including labor, materials, equipment, subcontractor, trucking, self‑perform production rates and time‑based (general conditions) requirements.
- Bid Management: Prepare and complete the entire bid preparation process including quantity take‑offs, subcontractor and supplier solicitations, pricing and closing procedures. Analyze to ensure scope completeness, compliance with tender requirements, and competitive pricing.
- Strategy: Identify innovative construction methodologies, procurement opportunities, risk mitigation measures,
and execution strategies that improve project competitiveness and profitability.
- Cost Analysis: Develop detailed labour, equipment, and material pricing based on historical performance, market intelligence, productivity assumptions, and current industry conditions. Analyze production rates, haul distances, and resource requirements to ensure accurate costing.
- Collaboration: Work closely with the Operations team to establish execution strategies and resource requirements to carry in planning, budgeting, and scheduling.
- Risk Assessment: Collaborate with estimating team to identify and complete risk analysis associated with projects.
- Process Improvement: Continuously improve estimating systems, databases, productivity benchmarks, and cost tracking processes to enhance estimate accuracy and efficiency.
- Interaction: Work closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, Engineers, and Owners throughout project delivery lifecycle.
- Participate: Attend and prepare internal pre‑tender meetings, estimate reviews, and tender closing meetings. Attend project completion meetings to discuss positive and negative aspects of project.
- Handover: Prepare estimating documents, budgets, and contracts for the Operations project execution teams.
WHAT WILL MAKE YOU A POSITIVE IMPACT?
- Proven experience estimating heavy civil, infrastructure, industrial, mining, transportation, or municipal construction projects.
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Engineering Technology Diploma,
Construction Management Diploma or a construction‑related degree or diploma is considered an asset.
- Experience working in the field on construction projects will be considered an asset.
- Knowledge and understanding of different construction methods, planning, scheduling, sequencing, and timelines.
- Ability to analyze production rates, equipment utilization, labour productivity, and construction sequencing.
- Resourceful and self‑motivated with strong organizational skills and ability to multitask.
- Solid ability to develop and maintain productive working relationships with owners, peers, and industry representatives, and leverage industry relationships for a competitive advantage.
- Knowledge of Primavera P6 and/or MS Project.
- Experience working in Bluebeam, CAD, and/or digitized takeoff software.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills to collaborate with team members, subcontractors, and clients.
- Flexibility and adaptability to work in a fast‑paced and dynamic environment, with the ability to adjust priorities and strategies as needed to meet changing project requirements and deadlines.
- Understands the importance of internal departmental collaboration and communication.
- Must hold a valid driver’s license.
