This staffing process aims to fill the position of Director, Operational Engineering Assessment Division and to establish a pool of qualified candidates for future staffing needs within the Directorate of Assessment and Analysis (DAA).

The pool resulting from this process may also be used to staff similar positions within the CNSC with similar qualifications and various tenures including term, acting, assignment and indeterminate.

Physical onsite presence in Ottawa, Ontario will be required 6 to 8 days per month.

What you’ll do
As the Director, Operational Engineering Assessment Division, you will report to the Director General, Directorate of Assessment and Analysis, and provide strategic leadership and oversight for the evaluation of engineering and operational safety at regulated nuclear facilities and other regulated facilities. You will lead a multidisciplinary team of technical specialists to assess facility systems, design modifications, and operational performance against regulatory requirements, ensuring the continued protection of health, safety, security, and the environment.

As the director of OEAD, you will also :

Lead a multidisciplinary team of technical specialists to assess fitness for service of reactors' major components/systems against regulatory requirements, ensuring continued safe operation of operating reactors and assessing fitness for service programs for proposed new builds in a manner that protects the health and safety of workers and the public.

Guide the development and application of engineering-related regulatory expectations, including associated regulatory documents and Canadian Standards.

Present and defend recommendations to CNSC executives, other management and the Commission.

Promote and lead your team in collaborating with key internal partners to develop risk informed positions

Represent the CNSC on various national and international committees related to the mandate of the divsion.

Essential Qualifications:
Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Science from a recognized post-secondary institution.

Language Requirements: Bilingual imperative with a proficiency at CBC level. If you are unsure of your proficiency level, we encourage you to take a self-assessment here

Experience:

Experience engaging and influencing industry representatives, government partners, senior executives and other key partners to achieve strategic objectives related to complex nuclear engineering and related regulatory matters.

Experience in the application or development of a regulatory framework for nuclear reactors.

Experience leading complex engineering or technical programs and projects, including setting priorities, and delivering results under tight timelines.

Experience managing human and financial resources.

Experience providing strategic direction and oversight for the assessment of nuclear engineering, operational safety, or regulatory compliance.

Knowledge of:

Knowledge of the principles, theories and practices associated with nuclear reactor design, analysis and operation

Knowledge of the CNSC’s approach to Risk-informed decision making

Knowledge of the challenges and opportunities facing the nuclear industry and/or the CNSC over the next 5 to 10 years.

Asset Qualification:

Experience working at a Nuclear Power Plant, Nuclear Research organization or nuclear reactor Design Organization

Experience in leading knowledge management or knowledge transfer initiatives in nuclear science & engineering disciplines

Operational Needs:
All CNSC staff are subject to the Mobility Directive.

This position requires frequent travel.
