Position Overview
The Accessibility Desk Staff member is a dedicated advocate for inclusivity and guest comfort, serving as the primary resource for attendees navigating the convention with specific access needs. In this staff-level role, you will remain seated at a stationary service desk to provide specialized guest assistance, answer questions regarding the venue's accessibility features, and help distribute accommodations. If you are an empathetic, clear communicator who thrives in a welcoming, customer-service-driven environment, then you would be a good fit for this role.
Time Commitment
- Year-round: None
- As convention approaches: Attend online staff meetings and trainings when requested
- Convention weekend: On-site presence is required with flexible hours. Must plan to work the minimum volunteer hour requirement posted on the website
- Pre and post-convention: None
Key Responsibilities
Your shift will center around desk-based hospitality, policy communication, and direct attendee assistance:
- Desk-Based Guest Services: Maintain a consistent, welcoming presence while remaining seated at the Accessibility Desk to greet and assist attendees who require support or information
- Accessibility Inquiries: Provide clear, accurate, and polite information regarding venue logistics, elevator locations, quiet spaces, and specific panel room seating arrangements
- Accommodations Distribution: Assist in verifying, logging, and distributing convention-specific accessibility resources (such as specialized badges, ribbons, or other assistive materials) according to established department protocols
Qualifications
Required:
- Punctuality & Desk Presence: Strict adherence to your scheduled shift times. Because attendees rely heavily on this dedicated resource, remaining at the desk and ready to assist during your shift is critical
- Physical Adaptability: Comfort with staying seated at a stationary service desk for the duration of a multi-hour shift
- Aptitude for Learning: A proven ability to quickly memorize venue layouts, ADA-compliant routes, and internal convention accommodation policies during staff training
- Professionalism & Empathy: Robust interpersonal skills to handle interactions with a diverse group of attendees with absolute patience, discretion, and a reassuring demeanor
Preferred:
- Customer Service or Advocacy Experience: Prior experience in hospitality, front-desk reception, guest relations, or working directly within disability services or accessibility advocacy roles
- Fandom & Convention Knowledge: An understanding of convention culture, community dynamics, and the unique layout or social expectations of fan-driven events, enabling you to anticipate specific attendee needs
