Apiculturist
About the Job The primary focus for this position is a comprehensive extension and applied research program that will assist maritime beekeepers increase pollination capability, and enhance the skills needed to provide industry advancements in hive health and productivity, and competitiveness.
The ideal candidate will have a background in extension and/or research in agriculture, particularly in these sectors.
Hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, fully in office in Bible Hill for the first three (3) months. A hybrid option may be discussed after the initial three (3) months.
What you’ll do
- Assist the ATTTA team lead with research and extension projects for honeybees and pollination by working collaboratively with beekeepers and blueberry growers throughout the maritime provinces
- Responsible for delivering workshops, farm visits, conducting field trials, data processing and offering knowledge transfer
- Engage and develop strong work relationships with growers and beekeepers
- Conduct field work including working directly with honeybee colonies
- Assist with research projects
- Work with the Atlantic Tech Transfer Team for Apiculture to achieve a sustainable Atlantic Canadian honeybee and pollination sector.
What’s needed
- Undergraduate degree in Agriculture or other science related programs, completion of a master’s program is preferred
- Eligibility for professional agrologist status; and a background of study in bees or pollination; research background in is an asset
- At least two (2) years working in an agricultural sector in research and/or extension or three (3) years working hands-on with honeybees. On the job training is provided.
- Demonstrated experience designing and organizing field work, data management and analysis
- Strong research and report writing proficiencies
- Demonstrated presentation and teaching skills
- Familiarity with Queen honeybees, pollination, bee nutrition, varroa mites,
other bee diseases and pests
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, with irregular hours (evenings/weekends) required
- Ability to travel locally, as well as regional and nationally
- Superior Microsoft Office Suite skills with an emphasis on Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Valid divers license and reliable vehicle
- The position requires significant physical effort with requirements to be able to lift heavy items
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to speak/write French would be considered an asset.
