WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:
The Communicative Disorder Assistant (CDA), under the direction and guidance of a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP), enhances the communication skills and swallowing ability of patients in partnership with their families and community. This is achieved through prevention, education, treatment, consultation, and management of communication disorders/delays and swallowing difficulties.
WHAT YOU MUST HAVE:
- Completion of post graduate Communicative Disorders Assistant program and/or completion of a post-secondary diploma / undergraduate degree with emphasis in communication disorders, linguistics, human anatomy and physiology, social sciences, or human services curriculum
- Current member of Communicative Disorders Assistant Association of Canada (CDAAC)
- Specialized knowledge and experience working with adults with communication disorders and swallowing impairments
- Specialized knowledge of stroke rehabilitation
- Ability to recognize the limits of the scope of practice as outlined in the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists (CASLPO) guidelines for use of support personnel
- Keen interest in using a goal oriented and patient-centered approach to patient care
- Ability to work well within a multidisciplinary team as well as independently
- Innovative critical thinking skills and the ability to analyze and make decisions
- Computer skills that support the utilization of online tools/apps, Microsoft Office programs and the Cerner Electronic Patient Record
- Ability to adapt to changes in assignment throughout a shift, follow instructions and proactive to departmental initiatives
- Highly team and customer focused with the ability to communicate respectfully in a pleasant, flexible, and professional manner with all patients, families, staff, and volunteers
- Physical ability to perform assigned duties
- Demonstrated acceptable previous performance reflective of STEGH's Mission, Vision, Values and Code of Conduct
- Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis in accordance with STEGH’s Attendance Support Program
WHAT WE PREFER YOU TO HAVE:
- Minimum of three (3) years’ clinical experience with adults in a hospital setting preferred
HOURS: This position must be available to work days, all shifts on weekends and/or statutory holidays. In addition, this position must be flexible to occasional changes in hours when required to meet the operational needs of the department and meet the non-availability requirements of the Collective Agreement as well as accept short notice relief calls.
