Mission Impact / Role Summary
St. Matt’s is a place of hope where families, children and individuals most in need receive help to improve their lives and to increase their capacity to participate in the community. Through positive leadership and role modeling, the Day Centre Supervisor is responsible for carrying out the duties and responsibilities of the position in accordance with the mission of St. Matt’s.
The Day Centre Supervisor reports to the Manager, Social Services and is responsible for advancing the health and well-being of the people St. Matt’s serves and supervising staff in providing ongoing social services support and nutritious meals to the clients of the Drop-In Day Centre and other programs as required. The Day Centre Supervisor will also support the overall operation of the kitchen and supervision of the kitchen staff.
The Day Centre Supervisor will oversee services to underhoused individuals or those experiencing homelessness through case management, assessing, planning with clients, referring, crisis intervention, supportive counseling, advocating, educating, linking with medical and mental health supports, emergency shelters and/or other professionals. The service is primarily focused on people living with responsible mental illness and/or who are homeless or underhoused. All duties are performed with a multidisciplinary and multiagency team approach.
Duties and Responsibilities
It is the responsibility of the Day Centre Supervisor to assist staff to support individuals living with challenges to promote the achievement of optimal health and well-being among adults experiencing homelessness and living in the community through such activities as:
- Providing a comfortable, inclusive and welcoming environment.
- Provide leadership and coaching to day centre staff, kitchen staff and volunteers.
- Provide support and crisis intervention to individuals living in at-risk conditions.
- Advocate on behalf of clients and/or support them to advocate for themselves
- Collaborate, coordinate and consult with community agencies, hospitals, mental health professionals etc.
- Oversee kitchen team, kitchen budget and maintenance of inventory
- Assist and advise the Manager, Social Services, of required updates to client policies, procedures or kitchen procedures
- Ensure that cleanliness and hygiene meet high standards and adheres to Public Health
- guidelines and recommendations
- Creating/taking part in inclusive programming and engage in EDI focused community outreach for new St. Matt’s initiatives, including new community/municipal partnerships.
- Other duties as reasonably assigned
Skills / Knowledge
- Diploma in social work, social services, related field or equivalent experience
- A minimum of 3 years of experience working in a community service based non-profit organization
- Experience in mental health services and other community programs
- Supervisory and leadership experience preferred
- Knowledge of community resources and services, social and environmental determinants of health, health promotion, disease prevention, rehabilitative, and supportive services
- Knowledge of methods and procedures for serving food, principles of sanitation and principles of safe food handling required
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with ability to interact with people of all ages and cultural backgrounds
- Effective decision making, problem solving and leadership skills
- Completion of a satisfactory Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Sector Check prior to employment start date.
- Food Handler Certification
- A valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle is an asset
- Valid Certificate – Standard First Aid with Level C CPR is an asset
- Non-violent crisis intervention training is an asset
- Fluent in at least one other language is an asset
Mental Effort / Working Conditions / Physical Effort
- The Day Centre Supervisor’s role is in a fast-paced public Day Centre environment. Some office work will also be required for ordering, writing case notes, documentation of activities, preparing monthly statistics etc.
- A valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle are required as some local travel is necessary
- There are no extenuating physical requirements for the job. The ability to lift 4.5 kg (10 lbs.) is required.
