Job Summary
Situated within UVic Libraries’ Collection Management Services, the Digital Collections Assistant (DCA) reports to the Digital Collections Operations Manager and plays a key role in making cultural collections available online, through their work digitizing physical resources and describing those resources to facilitate discovery.
The DCA primarily carries out high-quality standardized description of library resources, creating metadata for a wide variety of subjects, languages, and formats in the Libraries’ digital collections platforms. The DCA also works under the guidance of the Digitization Supervisor to digitize a broad range of physical material, process images, and multimedia file formats.
This position requires moderate lifting, pulling, reaching, kneeling, crouching,
repetitive movement and standing or sitting for long periods.
Job Requirements
Experience:
This position requires a level of education, training, and experience equivalent to 3 years’ working within a comparable environment. This ideally includes experience in metadata and/or cataloguing using library standards in an academic setting, working with digital asset management systems and digitization.

- Proficiency with computer applications (i.e., MS-Office Suite – especially Excel, Adobe Create Suite, content management systems) and data remediation software (i.e. OpenRefine)
- Ability to work with a high degree of accuracy while performing repetitive tasks
- Ability to use equipment and software documentation to operate, and troubleshoot issues
- Knowledge of basic windows file management including directory paths, shared drives, file properties, etc.
- Ability to work independently and within a team environment in a qualified and conscientious manner
- Excellent analytical and research skills
- Ease using technology and enthusiasm for applying technology to solve problems
- Excellent organizational skills
- Flexibility and willingness to adapt to new ideas and concepts
Specialized knowledge/education
- Working knowledge of efficient searching and use of cataloguing and metadata online tools and databases (OCLC, Amicus, Library of Congress databases, etc.) is an asset
- Experience using digitization equipment, such as flatbed, overhead, and 3D scanners, along with experience with SLR cameras and digital photography would be an asset
- Experience using video or audio editing software, Photoshop and Irfanview, and editing PDF documents is an asset
- Bachelor’s degree in any discipline is strongly preferred
- Knowledge of at least one language other than English is an asset
