Position Summary The research team seeks a Graduate Research Assistant to support a national survey study examining institutional betrayal, institutional courage, and moral injury among faculty across social work, education, nursing, and sociology. The study explores how political pressure and institutional responses shape faculty trust, teaching, scholarship, and self-censorship across higher education disciplines.

The Graduate Research Assistant will support the research team with sample frame development, recruitment preparation, survey testing, recruitment tracking, data cleaning, codebook preparation, descriptive analysis, and preliminary table and figure development. This position is well suited for a graduate student interested in higher education, social work education, organizational climate, academic freedom, ADEI-related teaching and scholarship, survey research, or quantitative/mixed-methods research.

Primary Responsibilities Sample Frame Development The Graduate Research Assistant will help compile national sampling frames for social work, education, nursing, and sociology programs.

Responsibilities will include identifying eligible academic programs using publicly available program directories, accreditation or professional association directories where available, and institutional websites. The assistant will extract publicly available faculty contact information from program webpages, including information for tenured and tenure-track faculty, clinical faculty, adjunct faculty, and program administrators.

Recruitment Database Management The assistant will organize faculty contact information by discipline, institution, academic role, and other relevant tracking categories. They will maintain a structured recruitment database to support survey distribution, recruitment monitoring, and opt-out management. Accuracy, consistency, and attention to detail will be essential.

Survey Preparation and Testing The Graduate Research Assistant will assist with Qualtrics survey preparation and testing prior to launch. This may include reviewing survey flow, checking item wording, testing links, identifying formatting issues, and helping ensure that recruitment materials and survey procedures are ready for fielding.

Recruitment Tracking

During data collection, the assistant will help track recruitment contacts, monitor response rates, and manage opt-outs. They may also assist with preparing updated recruitment lists and documenting recruitment progress across the four disciplines.

Data Cleaning and Codebook Preparation

After data collection,



the assistant will help clean survey data and prepare codebooks for analysis. This may include checking variable names, identifying missing data patterns, documenting coding decisions, preparing derived variables, and organizing datasets for analysis.

Preliminary Data Analysis and Reporting The assistant will assist with running descriptive statistics and generating preliminary tables and figures. Depending on skills and experience, this may include frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, ranges, and basic comparisons across disciplines or participant groups.

Required Qualifications Applicants should be enrolled as a graduate student at Binghamton University during the appointment period. Strong candidates will demonstrate careful attention to detail, reliability, robust organizational skills, and the ability to work independently after receiving direction. Applicants should be comfortable working with spreadsheets, managing large amounts of information, and following detailed research protocols.

Preferred Qualifications Preferred qualifications include experience with survey research, Qualtrics, Excel, SPSS, R, or another statistical software program. Prior experience with data cleaning, codebook development, literature-informed research, recruitment tracking, or human subjects research is also helpful.

Interest in higher education, social work education, academic freedom, organizational climate, institutional betrayal, institutional courage, moral injury, or ADEI-related teaching and scholarship is strongly preferred.

Skills Developed Through The Position

This position will provide applied experience in national survey research, sample frame development, recruitment database construction, Qualtrics survey testing, human subjects research procedures, data cleaning, codebook preparation, descriptive statistics, and research dissemination. The Graduate Research Assistant will also gain experience working as part of a research team.

Supervision The Graduate Research Assistant will be supervised by Dr. Heather E. Deal in the Department of Social Work. The assistant may also work with members of the broader research team and discipline consultants as needed.
