Helix Geotechnical Consulting Ltd. provides geotechnical engineering, construction materials testing and quality-control services throughout Alberta. We support municipal, commercial, residential, industrial and infrastructure projects with practical recommendations, responsive field services and reliable reporting.

We are currently seeking a full-time Materials Technician to support our field and laboratory operations. This position is well suited to someone who enjoys working outdoors, takes pride in accurate work and is comfortable working independently on active construction sites.

One to two years of materials testing or construction experience is preferred. However, applicants with relevant education and strong practical experience are also encouraged to apply.

Some assignments may be based at out-of-town project sites. When applicable, accommodations will be arranged and provided by Helix.

Responsibilities The Materials Technician will be responsible for:

- Performing field testing and inspections of soils, aggregates and concrete.
- Conducting compaction testing using a nuclear density gauge.
- Completing concrete testing, including slump, air content, temperature and preparation of test cylinders.
- Performing proof-roll observations, subgrade inspections and bearing surface inspections.
- Monitoring the placement and workmanship of construction materials.
- Collecting, identifying and transporting samples for laboratory testing.
- Performing laboratory testing such as moisture-density relationships, sieve analysis, Atterberg limits, hydrometer analysis,



concrete curing and compressive-strength testing.
- Accurately recording field observations and test results.
- Preparing clear and timely field reports.
- Identifying and communicating non-conforming conditions to the project manager or supervising engineer.
- Maintaining testing equipment, vehicles and assigned work areas.
- Communicating professionally with contractors, clients, consultants and other project representatives.
- Supporting Helix’s Quality Management System and laboratory certification requirements.

Qualifications

- One to two years of experience in construction materials testing, geotechnical fieldwork or a related construction role is preferred.
- A diploma in Civil Engineering Technology, Engineering Design Technology or a related program is considered an asset.
- Experience with soil-compaction testing and concrete testing is preferred.
- CCIL concrete certification is considered an asset.
- CCIL aggregate or soils certification is considered an asset.
- Nuclear density gauge certification is considered an asset.
- CSTS 2020 and WHMIS 2015 certifications are preferred.
- A valid Class 5 driver’s licence with a clean driving record is required.
- Ability to travel and work at project sites throughout Alberta.




- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and site conditions.
- Ability to lift and carry materials or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Good attention to detail and the ability to maintain accurate records.
- Ability to work independently, manage changing priorities and coordinate with the project team.

Work Conditions

- Full-time, in-person position.
- Work will include a combination of laboratory, local field and out-of-town project assignments.
- Some projects may require extended stays at project sites, with accommodations provided.
- Hours may vary depending on construction schedules, concrete pours and project requirements.
- Early mornings, evenings, weekends and overtime may occasionally be required.
- Travel time, overtime and project-related expenses will be handled in accordance with company policies.

Pay: $23.00-$30.00 per hour
