We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Recreation Assistant to enhance the quality of life for residents at Gemstone Care Centre. The ideal candidate will possess a genuine enthusiasm for engaging with seniors, creating meaningful recreational activities that promote wellness, socialization, and enjoyment. As a Recreation Assistant, you will coordinate and facilitate diverse programs, ensuring a safe, inclusive, and vibrant environment that supports residents' physical, emotional, and social needs.
Responsibilities
- Plan, organize, and lead engaging recreational activities tailored to residents’ interests and abilities, including those with dementia or other cognitive impairments.
- Assist residents in participating in activities, providing encouragement and support to foster independence and confidence.
- Collaborate with care staff to integrate therapeutic activities that promote mobility, cognitive function, and emotional well-being.
- Maintain a safe environment by adhering to safety protocols during all recreational activities and ensuring equipment is properly maintained.
- Document resident participation and feedback to continually improve activity programs and meet individual needs.
- Foster a positive community atmosphere by encouraging social interaction among residents through group events and one-on-one engagement.
- Support residents with disabilities or special needs by adapting activities to accommodate their specific requirements.
Skills
- Graduation from a recognized institution with a Recreational/Activity Certification or combination of experience/training.
- Maintains Food Protected Level 1.
- Passes and complies with Ministry of Justice Criminal record Check upon hire and every 5 years thereafter.
- Ability to effectively communicate in English, both verbal and written.
- Prior experience working in assisted living facilities or nursing homes with seniors or individuals with disabilities.
- Knowledge of dementia care principles and techniques for engaging residents with cognitive impairments.
- Strong caregiving skills combined with excellent communication abilities to connect effectively with residents of diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to develop creative activity plans that promote physical movement, mental stimulation, and socialization.
- Compassionate attitude coupled with patience, empathy, and active listening skills.
- Familiarity with safety standards related to recreational equipment and resident supervision.
- Experience in caregiving roles emphasizing senior care or disability support is highly desirable.
