The Ministry of Education has identified First Nation education as one of its key priorities with two primary challenges: to improve student achievement among First Nation students and to close the gap between First Nation students in the areas of literacy and numeracy, retention of students in schools, graduation rates, and advancement to post-secondary studies. It is the role of the Teacher to cultivate the student’s interest in education and lifelong learning. The incumbent is a competent, caring professional with knowledge of the Batchewana community, excellent written and verbal communication skills, demonstrated interpersonal abilities, and proven experience working with young adults and teens in reaching their educational goals.

Duties & Responsibilities Academic Advising

- Organize the transmission of academic data between education institutions.
- Review credit summaries and transfer to academic plans that meet the needs of the students and that create a meaningful and realistic path toward the completion of their Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
- Ensure that student transcript information fulfills Ontario Ministry of Education Diploma requirements.
- Distribute and assess completed Mature Student Equivalency Credit Applications in order to determine student eligibility for Mature Credits, and to properly convert supported life and work experiences into elective credits.
- Facilitate the delivery of Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition for Mature Students (mPLAR) in English, Math, History, Geography, and Science in order to determine eligibility for Grade 9/10 Prior Learning Equivalency credits (PLE).
- Administer and interpret standardized intelligence, aptitude, and interest tests.




- Refer students to other specialized services when required.

Teaching

- Deliver course material in person or online to students based on their unique academic plans.
- Teach course material at the senior level in all subject areas.
- Deliver mPLAR course material and assessments in Math, English, Science, History, and Geography.
- Create and administer culminative assessments.
- Ensure that all courses and programming align with Ministry curriculum standards.
- Provide physical, social, cognitive, emotional, and skill development for students.
- Create and deliver Indigenous cultural and land-based education opportunities.

Special Education

- Review Ontario School Records (OSR) for each student to determine what additional supports may be required to promote academic success.
- Identify student areas of need and refer to the appropriate department for services.
- Ensure that the accommodations or modifications set out in the student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP) are met.
- Advocate for the needs of identified students.
- Work closely with the parent, the student, and their support team to develop and implement a transition plan (educational and career counselling).
- Maintain records and provide summary reports.

Administration

- Oversee and supervise the day-to-day program operation, curriculum, and extra-curricular activities.
- Create a safe learning environment for students and ensure school facilities remain safe.
- Research and acquire new materials and resources to improve the experience of students.
- Organize school events and assemblies.
- Complete administrative tasks relating to the successful execution of programming,



such as writing reports, developing work plans, writing grant applications, responding to inquiries by phone and email, preparing letters, and planning future programming.
- Foster and encourage a positive workplace that promotes a team approach to planning and development, service delivery, and problem solving.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

- Favorable Canadian Police Information Check (CPIC) with Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC).
- Valid G Driver’s Licence and/or access to a reliable vehicle.

Required Skills

- Bachelor of Education.
- Intermediate and Secondary School Qualifications.
- Member in Good Standing with the Ontario College of Teachers.
- 1–2 years of experience.
