Vision Loss Rehabilitation Canada (VLRC) is a national health services organization dedicated to empowering people who are blind or partially sighted to live safely and independently. Our certified specialists provide client-centered rehabilitation, mobility training, and daily living skills programs that help clients build confidence and thrive. We work collaboratively with ophthalmologists, optometrists, and other health care professionals, offering essential care on a referral basis in homes, workplaces, and communities across the country.

Position Details

Position Title: Vision Rehabilitation Assistant

Location: Timmins, ON

Term: Full-time, Permanent

Reports To: Sr. Manager Healthcare Operations & Specialized Programs

Salary: $24.05/hour

Responsibilities

This position is responsible for completing a broad range of responsibilities and duties that will enhance the provision of Vision Loss Rehabilitation Services. The primary responsibilities include working in collaboration with our ACVREP certified Rehabilitation Specialists in the areas of Vision Rehabilitation, Assistive Technology, Orientation and Mobility and Low Vision to carry out established rehabilitation activities to support achievement of goals or programs.

- Under the direction of the Rehabilitation Specialists, receive referrals and assist with the implementation of rehabilitation plans/programs.
- As part of a multidisciplinary team and in consultation with specialists, provide input into the planning, implementation, modification, and evaluation of rehabilitative treatment plans.
- Demonstrate and teach adaptive skills for independent living in areas of personal management, household management, communication, basic indoor orientation & mobility skills utilizing vision enhancement tools, basic keyboarding and technology training.
- Assist Specialists with the maintenance and inventory of adaptive devices and demonstrate consumer products and low vision aids.
- Assist in monitoring and evaluating treatment and care plans and report observations and progress to the specialist.




- Provide functional direction to the client and other stakeholders to maximize the client's rehabilitation process.
- Maintain all case data and documentation consistent with VLRC Systems and Procedures.
- Collaborate with rehabilitation team in service delivery, coordinate travel schedules, and facilitate program development.

Relationships

- Maintain close working relationships with all members of the rehabilitation team.
- Provide support and consultation to individuals and their families regarding adjustment to vision loss.
- Attend and participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings.
- Promote understanding and awareness of vision health related issues through consultation, public education, and in-service training.

- Exercise valuable judgment when determining if clients require a referral to another VLRC service or external services, and communicate with Specialist.

- Skilled in Microsoft software applications and ability to care for computer hardware and learn various applications as applicable for the position.
- Excellent navigation skills.

Experience and Education

- Post-secondary education and/or prior experience in a Rehabilitation Assistant program, Occupational or Physical Therapy Assistant program, Social Work or related field preferred.
- Previous working/volunteering experience with individuals who are blind or partially sighted or with combined loss of hearing and sight is an asset.
- Clean Criminal Record required; Criminal Reference Check required for vulnerable populations.

Work Environment

- Willingness to work flexible hours.
- Willingness to work in a variety of settings (virtually, VLRC clinic, client home, community settings, etc.).
- Travel will be required.
