Organization Details Organization Name: Meals on Wheels Winnipeg Address: 174 Hargrave Street Winnipeg MB R3C 3N2 Website: http://www.mealswinnipeg.com Organizational Description: Meals on Wheels provides meals to those who are unable to obtain or prepare meals for themselves. While providing nutritious food is an key part of the Organization's services, the daily visit from volunteers is equally important to clients. For many of them, the volunteer visit is their only contact with another individual during the day and therefore eases the feeling of loneliness.

For the families and friends of clients, they are assured that a trained volunteer provides meals to them on a regular basis giving them the confidence of security that their loved ones are provided for. These factors set us apart from the frozen food sections in grocery stores.

Volunteer Opportunity Details Volunteer

Opportunity ID: 1615 Description of Duties: Thank you very much for your interest in volunteering with Meals on Wheels! Volunteers are the heart of our organization, donating their time and energy to deliver nutritious meals to Winnipeg's senior citizens, people with disabilities, and vulnerable members of the community. Additionally, our volunteers provide the added benefit of a friendly face and kind word to those who may have limited to no outside social contact, helping to foster a stronger sense of belonging and community.

Volunteers pick up meals from Health Sciences Centre between the hours of 10:30am and 1:00pm Monday to Friday. They are responsible for delivering to approximately 15-18 customers who live in houses and apartment buildings on a pre-determined route, and then return the equipment to the hospital. Volunteers can choose as few as 1 route per month or as many as 1 route per day, book off at anytime (ideally with as much notice as possible) and remain on hold if not available during certain times of the year.

We offer our Volunteer drivers a $7.00 gas honorarium for every route they drive (paid out every 3 months by cheque or an annual tax-deductible donation). Volunteers must have a valid driver's license, a safe vehicle to deliver in, and can deliver by themselves or in pairs where one person drives and the other serves (only the driver receives the $7.00 honorarium). Training is provided in the form of a 45 minute information session at our office at 174 Hargrave Street, and a staff member accompanies all new volunteers on their first route.
