Overview

As a member of the military, Medical Laboratory Technologists provide medical laboratory data used in the treatment and diagnosis of surgical and medical conditions in detachments and clinics, as well as in combat and operational units. They must perform duties according to established protocols, safety guidelines and existing legislation at all times.

Their duties include:

- Collecting and preparing biological specimens for analysis
- Performing routine and specialized analyses
- Validating test results
- Performing analytical techniques on specimens from a variety of sources
- Practising and promoting principles of quality and resource management

Work Workplace

These technologists work in a variety of medical facilities and temporary laboratories while deployed in peace‑keeping, combat and humanitarian missions worldwide. They may work in shifts and can be posted to bases in Canada, deployed on missions around the world, or on ships at sea. Depending on whether they join the Regular Force, Primary Reserve Force, or a specific Reserve unit, postings and relocations vary; the former may require relocation, whereas the latter may involve part‑time or limited weekly hours.

Entry Plans

Direct Entry Options and Paid Education Options are available. Applicants must be unconditionally admitted or enrolled as a full‑time student in an academic program chosen by the CAF under the Non‑Commissioned Member Subsidised Training and Education Plan (NCMSTEP) program.

- Applicants must have a college diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology,



certification from the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS), and an unrestricted licence or registration to practice (active status).
- Applicants must provide a letter of positive standing from a provincial/territorial regulatory authority under the Direct Entry Plan.
- Those who graduated more than 12 months ago must have at least six months of full‑time or part‑time clinical medical laboratory experience within the last two years; recent graduates are exempt.
- Foreign education may be accepted.

Training

The first stage is the Basic Military Qualification course, held at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Quebec, which includes core skills and Canadian Armed Forces physical fitness training.

Subsequent training includes a one‑year preceptor programme in a Canadian medical unit, and for NCMSTEP applicants, portions or all of Basic Occupational Qualification Training may take place at approved Canadian colleges, universities or other post‑secondary establishments.

Medical Laboratory Technologists may also develop specialised skills through formal courses and on‑the‑job training, such as leadership and management. Advanced training is offered to those who demonstrate required ability and potential as they progress in their career.
