Position Purpose

Citxw Nlaka'pamux Assembly (CNA) was created in 2013 as a powerful and unifying voice for eight Nlaka’pamux Bands regarding the Teck Highland Valley Copper Mine. It is governed by a Board of Directors appointed by the eight Participating Bands. Headquartered in Merritt, BC, with a workforce of over 60, CNA provides training and job readiness along with cultural, social, and technical programming to the over 3035 members of the eight Participating Bands.

We are looking for a reliable and enthusiastic individual to assist our team in preparing meals for community events and gatherings. This role supports the lead cooks and involves helping with safe food preparation, traditional cooking practices, and maintaining cleanliness and sanitation standards in our kitchen. The ideal candidate is a team player with a willingness to learn, strong attention to detail, and a shared passion for bringing people together through food.

Good communication skills and the ability to follow direction in a busy kitchen environment are essential.

Primary Duties

- Prepare and cook meals for community events and gatherings, ensuring offerings reflect cultural values and traditions,
- Preserve wild game, fish, berries, plants, and other harvested foods using traditional and modern preservation methods, including smoking, drying, canning, and freezing,
- Support seasonal harvesting and food-processing activities, including the safe handling, preparation, storage, labeling, and organization of harvested and preserved foods,
- Work with Elders, community members, and team members to support and uphold traditional food preparation and preservation practices,
- Maintain kitchen and food preservation areas to a high standard of cleanliness,



organization, and food safety,
- Monitor and organize kitchen supplies and preserved food inventory,
- Assist with hosting Elders and community members during catered events and community programming, ensuring they feel welcomed and supported, and
- Other ad hoc duties as assigned by the Kitchen keykix or designate.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends, as community events and gatherings often take place during these times,
- A strong sense of community and teamwork, supporting fellow cooks and connecting with our members through food,
- Knowledge of traditional foods and medicine and cultural practices, including preparation of wild game and harvested plants,
- Knowledge of canning, drying, butchering, and other preservation methods,
- Self-motivated and can work on their own without supervision,
- Ability to follow recipes and/or meal plans,
- Solid level of written and verbal communication skills, and
- Ability to work in a team setting, accept responsibility, and work to deadlines.

Experience and Requirements

- A Food Safe Certificate or ability to obtain (employer-sponsored) is an asset,
- Experience with seasonal availability and traditional harvesting practices is preferred,

- 1-2 years of experience with cooking in a professional setting,
- Physically fit, able to stand for long periods of time, and lift up to 25lbs,
- Willingness to travel for up to five days at a time,

- A valid Class 5 Drivers License, with access to a reliable personal vehicle, and
- Willingness to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Check.

Work Environment

- Schedule:



Monday through Friday between 8:30am and 4:30pm, with a 1-hour unpaid lunch break, fluctuating when needed. On average, 35 hours per week,
- Overtime: All daily overtime over 8 hours will be banked at 1.5x, all hours over 12 will be banked at 2x,
- Reporting Office Location: Office work will be conducted from the CNA office at 2025 Granite Ave, Merritt BC,
- Vacation: 2 weeks paid vacation (10 working days), accrued at 0.84 per month,
- Winter Break: 2 weeks paid (max 10 working days),
- Benefits: 50% benefit premiums paid by employer,
- Pension: Pension matching (percentage increasing with years of service), and
- Personal and Professional Development: As part of total compensation, we supply full-time permanent employees with the means to advance their skills and education.
