Responsibilities

This employment opportunity is restricted to Nunavut Inuit who reside in Arviat only.

An eligibility list may be created to fill current and future vacancies across the department in all communities.

The purpose of the Community Health Representative (CHR) position is to impact the health of Nunavummiut through upstream health promotion and illness prevention initiatives. Reporting to the Supervisor Health Programs (SHP) or the Nurse Manager, with support of community, regional, and territorial public and population health staff, the CHR provides evidence-based and culturally informed health promotion and behavior change information and education to enhance the health and wellbeing of Nunavummiut. The CHR helps to bridge the health center and the community, enhancing trust and understanding, leading integration of IQ into public health work in communities, and collaborating in the development and implementation of culturally informed resources and research.

The CHR is a leader in community engagement in the areas of health promotion, health protection, and disease and injury prevention by carrying out the following: Promote health and wellbeing in the community by responding to community public health needs and supporting regional and territorial public health priorities





• Liaison between the Department of Health, community and other departments and organizations

• Advocates in health and Inuit culture

• Build capacity using community development principles

• Other duties include but are not limited to:

- Participates in on-going career development.

- Develop work plans.

- Submit reports to Manager or Supervisor.

- Mentors students and colleagues (CHRs and nursing students).

- Assists with cultural and public health related research, including validating research and sharing research results back with communities.

Qualifications The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through high school diploma or equivalent and 1 years’ experience working in a northern community. This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset.

Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets. A valid driver’s license, First Aid/BCLS and CHR training, and education or experience in a health or education related field are also considered assets.
