Help Students Become Confident, Capable Readers

Sylvan Learning Centre is looking for an engaging Reading Teacher / Tutor who can support students across an important range of reading development; from new readers learning phonics and decoding to middle-school students developing stronger reading comprehension.

This role is ideal for a teacher, education professional, or experienced literacy tutor who understands that strong reading instruction looks different at every stage.

For an emerging reader, that may mean helping a child connect sounds and letters, blend words and develop accurate decoding skills. For an older student, it may mean strengthening vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, inference and the ability to understand increasingly complex texts.

You'll use Sylvan's established programs and instructional materials in a supportive learning environment, allowing you to focus on what matters most: helping students become stronger and more confident readers.

What You'll Teach

Depending on each student's learning needs, instruction may include:

- Phonemic awareness and foundational reading skills
- Letter-sound relationships and phonics
- Blending, decoding and word recognition
- Reading accuracy and fluency
- Vocabulary development
- Reading comprehension
- Identifying main ideas and supporting details
- Making inferences and drawing conclusions
- Understanding increasingly complex texts
- Reading strategies for junior and middle-school students

Important: This position requires the ability to work with both beginning readers who need explicit phonics/decoding instruction and older students who need reading-comprehension support.

What You'll Do

As a Sylvan Reading Teacher, you'll:

- Deliver engaging reading instruction to students individually and in small groups
- Follow Sylvan programs and individualized student learning plans
- Review and prepare Sylvan instructional materials before sessions
- Explain reading concepts and strategies in clear, age-appropriate ways
- Adapt your instruction to different ages, abilities and learning needs

- Create a warm, encouraging and productive learning setting
- Evaluate and record student progress
- Provide frequent positive reinforcement and constructive feedback
- Communicate specific student needs and observations to Centre staff
- Follow Centre procedures that support student safety and well-being
- Participate in periodic staff meetings and ongoing training
- Complete Sylvan certification training for the programs you teach

What We're Looking ForRequired
- A completed four-year degree or equivalent post-secondary education
- Knowledge of phonics and how to teach beginning readers to decode words
- Ability to teach reading comprehension to junior/intermediate or middle-school students
- Strong spoken and written English communication skills
- Ability to explain concepts patiently and in different ways when a student is struggling
- Robust interpersonal skills and an encouraging approach with children
- Dependability, organization and ability to manage multiple students and tasks
- A genuine interest in helping students become successful, confident readers

Assets - Not Requirements

- Previous teaching, tutoring or literacy-intervention experience
- One or more years of experience working with students
- Experience teaching phonemic awareness, systematic phonics, decoding or structured literacy
- Experience supporting struggling or reluctant readers
- Familiarity with Ontario Language curriculum expectations
- Ontario Certified Teacher (OCT) designation, current or expired
- OCT certification is not required.
