About the Role
Working within Cougars Athletics & Recreation, this is a flexible position whose work schedule is variable and may include an irregular schedule of not less than three (3) hours per shift and up to thirty-five (35) hours per week.
The Fitness Centre Associate is a motivated and positive individual who takes pride in their work. They possess an outgoing, fun, and skilled demeanour. In this role, you will be responsible for providing an exceptional customer experience to our members in support of our Recreation and Athletic programs.
Your duties will include keeping the fitness areas clean, assisting with equipment usage, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations and accessibility standards, and upholding facility rules and policies.
Shifts occur between 6:00 AM and 11:00 PM, weekdays, and 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM, weekends; staff must be able to work shifts within this range.
Responsibilities
Fitness Operations & Supervision
- Active Supervision: Monitor fitness areas and patrons to ensure safety and enforce facility rules and regulations.
- Front Desk Operations: Manage the fitness center desk, greet patrons, answer questions, and oversee the check-in/check-out of equipment.
- Facility Maintenance: Ensure workout spaces remain clean, organized, and presentable at all times.
- Equipment Care: Conduct routine checks to identify, log, and report equipment requiring maintenance or repair.
Customer Service & Administrative Support
- Client Relations: Address and resolve customer concerns with professionalism and empathy.
- Service Knowledge:
Maintain up-to-date expertise on memberships, personal training packages, programs, and facility offerings to guide users.
- Event Support: Assist the Fitness Shift Lead with room and facility setups for fitness programs, rentals, courses, and special events.
- Team Collaboration: Execute additional operational tasks as assigned by shift leads, supervisors, and recreation staff.
Safety & First Aid
- Emergency Response: Serve as an immediate responder for first aid incidents, providing prompt care and proper incident documentation.
Qualifications
Preferred
- Health & Physical Education Degree or Kinesiology Degree (or working towards).
- Personal Fitness Trainer Diploma or equivalent (or working towards).
- Personal Trainer certification or in progress (e.g., C-SEP, ACE).
- Specialty certifications (e.g., Older Adult, Strength and Conditioning).
Minimum:
- Current Intermediate (Standard) First Aid with CPR-C or the ability to obtain certification within 60 days of employment.
- At least one year of experience in the fitness or recreation industry.
Assets:
- Knowledge of ActiveNet software.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Customer service and conflict resolution experience.
Salary: $15.45 - $19.44 per hour
