POSITION SUMMARY The General Labourer is responsible for assisting with the safe and efficient construction, and installation of grain storage, handling and drying systems for agricultural customers throughout Southwestern Ontario.
This position provides hands-on support throughout all phases of construction projects, including site preparation, concrete work, structural assembly, equipment installation, material handling, and general labour activities. The General Labourer works closely with the construction team to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards while providing exceptional service to customers.
This is a contract position with the opportunity for permanent employment based on business needs and individual performance. Peak work season is generally April through November.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist in the successful completion of grain system construction projects from initial site preparation through project completion.
- Load, unload, and identify building materials, machinery and tools, and distribute them to the appropriate locations, in accordance with project plans and supervisor specifications.
- Follow construction drawings and specifications with supervisor direction.
- Assist in the preparation of structural foundations, including build and position forms and rebar and wire mesh installation for pouring concrete.
- Assist in the dismantling of concrete forms and other materials after use.
- Assist in the assembly of grain bin structures, and related grain handling and drying equipment.
- Properly wear and maintain required Personal Protective Equipment (“PPE”).
- Participate in daily safety meetings and hazard assessments.
- Safely operate basic hand tools, power tools and construction equipment appropriate for the position.
- Ensure company vehicles, trailers, work areas and job sites remain clean and organized throughout each project, maintaining debris to one location for clean up upon finishing a job.
- Perform daily inspection of tools and equipment before use, reporting any hazards, material issues, or damaged parts, tools or equipment to the supervisor.
Assist in ensuring projects and completed efficiently and within scheduled timelines.
- Assist in maintaining safe work practices while working at heights, around heavy equipment, around lifting operations, and during concrete work.
- Work in compliance with all administrative and health and safety policies and procedures, as per legislative requirements and as outlined in Company policies.
- Report process deficiencies and any administrative or health and safety policy or procedural infractions, as per legislative requirements and as outlined in Company policies,
to your direct reporting supervisor/manager, or other designate as applicable, for review.
- Assist in all departments, as directed to support business needs.
- Perform other general labourer duties as directed to support project completion.
- CSA steel toed construction grade safety boots in designated area(s).
- Participate in compulsory training as deemed necessary for the role.
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Previous construction, agricultural construction or general labour experience considered an asset.
- Previous experience with the assembly of grain bins, material handling equipment and grain storage systems an asset (or transferable skills and abilities from work experience in a similar construction environment).
- Willingness to work at heights required; valid training certification is an asset.
- Valid training certifications are considered an asset and any related previous work experience should be highlighted; i.e., Working at Heights, Fall Arrest, Aerial Lift, Elevated Work Platforms, Hoisting and Rigging, Confined Space, Lift Truck, etc.
- Valid Ontario driver’s license and means of daily/reliable transportation to and from our main location in Dover Centre (A, AZ or DZ license not required but considered an asset).
- Clean driving record preferred.
- Working at Heights, Confined Space, First Aid/CPR, Fall Arrest, Hoisting & Rigging, Aerial Lift or similar certifications considered assets.
- Ability to read a tape measure accurately.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision at times.
- Ability to work under pressure, while maintaining speed and accuracy to ensure daily work requirements are met.
- Strong oral and listening communication skills and cooperative team player attitude.
- Strong problem solving skills.

- Valid First Aid and CPR certification an asset.

WORKING CONDITIONS
- Primarily outdoor work with exposure to varying weather conditions, dust, noise, moving machinery and vibration.
- Frequent work at heights for certified individuals.
- Daily travel in company vehicles throughout Chatham-Kent and Southwestern Ontario to job sites.
- Occasional overnight travel depending on project requirements (with use of company vehicles).
- Extended workdays and overtime during peak construction season.
- Weekend work may occasionally be required.
- Rapid-paced, physically demanding construction environment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The successful candidate must be physically capable of performing the essential duties of this position, including but not limited to:
- Standing and walking for extended periods.
- Frequent climbing of ladders and grain structures.
- Frequent bending, kneeling, crouching and reaching.
- Working at heights.
- Lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling materials weighing up to 100 lbs.
- Repetitive use of hands and arms.
- Handling sharp steel materials and construction equipment.
- Working on uneven terrain.
