Position Summary Under the direction of the Manager of Environmental Health, the Healthy Environments Compliance Officer supports the delivery of programs mandated under the Ontario Public Health Standards. Designated as a Provincial Offences Officer, the Healthy Environments Compliance Officer supports compliance with municipal smoke-free bylaws and the Smoke-Free Ontario Act (SFOA) through a combination of health promotion, public education, and enforcement activities across the district of Algoma.
The Healthy Environments Compliance Officer supports the delivery of health education and health promotion activities related to tobacco, vaping, and smoke-free environments; engages with businesses, schools, community organizations, and the public; and collaborates with staff across multiple disciplines to support environmental health, community wellness and youth-based initiatives. Through collaboration with community stakeholders, the Healthy Environments Compliance Officer will provide valuable insights to inform healthy public policy related to tobacco, vaping, and smoke-free environments.
Qualifications, experience, and skills for this position include (but not limited to):
- Successful completion of a health, social services, law and justice, or related diploma program.
- Knowledge of tobacco control, vaping prevention, and the Smoke-Free Ontario Act (SFOA) is considered an asset.
- Experience in a previous enforcement discipline is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of or training in principles and practice of health promotion and health education.
- Experience delivering health promotion, outreach, or community education initiatives to a variety of audiences including businesses, community groups and the public.
- Proven ability to build relationships and collaborate with community partners to support health promotion objectives.
- Proven ability to manage conflict to obtain a positive outcome.
- Ability to complete required training to be appointed as a provincial offences officer.
- Demonstrated proficiency using Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Strong interest in professional development and self-learning.
- Solid time management and project management skills.
- Ability to perform self-directed work effectively, prepare reports and write program updates.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Must be reliable and have a good attendance record.
- Advanced oral and written proficiency in English is essential. Proficiency in both official languages and knowledge of additional languages relevant to our diverse communities will be considered an asset.
- Ability to work outside regular business hours, including weekends and evenings, is required.
- Requires a valid “G” Ontario Driver’s Licence and use of a reliable vehicle.
- Ability to travel to various locations throughout Algoma to deliver services.
- As a condition of employment, employees must meet immunization requirements in accordance with the APH Immunization policy.
- A current Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) with satisfactory clearance is a condition of employment, at your own expense.
