Position Overview:
We are hiring a Lead Hand / Line Operator to supervise production staff and ensure smooth operation of equipment and workflow in our recycling plant. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience, leadership abilities, and a strong commitment to workplace safety and productivity.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise employees in various production areas, including balers, forklift drivers, general labourers, and sort line operators
- Follow and enforce safety regulations, company policies, and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Operate production equipment and cover for team members when necessary
- Ensure staff are properly allocated and utilized across sections (HRB, GBN, Encorp, sort lines)
- Deliver training and clear instructions to new employees
- Motivate team members and communicate company vision effectively
- Maintain plant cleanliness, organization, and safety standards at all times
- Complete shift checklists, production reports, and paperwork accurately
- Conduct physical inspections of the line at the start and end of each shift (checking for leaks, wear, damage, etc.)
- Report equipment issues and coordinate with the maintenance department for timely repair
- Monitor task completion for speed, safety, and efficiency
- Ensure availability of equipment and tools for team members
- Resolve employee disputes and shift conflicts quickly and fairly
- Take immediate disciplinary action when unsafe or inappropriate behavior occurs
- Communicate effectively with truck drivers and external stakeholders
- Maintain housekeeping standards throughout the plant, including at shift end
- Submit improvement suggestions and innovative ideas to improve productivity and safety
- Perform other duties as assigned
Skills and Qualifications:
- Completion of secondary school (high school diploma)
- Minimum 1 year of experience in a manufacturing, warehouse, or recycling plant as a lead hand or assistant lead
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to motivate and manage teams
- Forklift, loader, or skid steer experience is an asset
- WHMIS or First Aid certification is considered an asset
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand/bend for long periods, and work in industrial conditions (heat, noise, etc.)
- Capable of quick decision-making and effective problem-solving
- Detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and highly dependable
- Basic understanding of workplace conflict resolution and human relations
- Comfortable using basic computer programs (e.g., MS Word, Excel) or production systems

Schedule:
- 10-12 hour shifts
- Monday to Friday (weekend availability as needed)
- Day/ Evening shift
