Manage the full lifecycle of geospatial data - from field collection with GPS/GNSS, UAVs, and 3D laser scanners to office processing and deliverables using GIS and CAD.
Position Description
Compass Geomatics is seeking a highly skilled and versatile Geomatics / GIS Technologist who is passionate about spatial data and innovative mapping technologies. In this role, you will be at the forefront of our field operations and office data processing, utilizing a comprehensive suite of geospatial tools including GIS software, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), and 3D laser scanning equipment. You will play a crucial role in capturing, analyzing, and visualizing spatial information to support our diverse range of projects.
Responsibilities

- Plan and execute UAV flights for aerial mapping, photogrammetry, and site inspections.
- Perform terrestrial 3D laser scanning to capture high-resolution as-built data of complex structures and environments.
- Process collected drone imagery to create orthomosaics, point clouds, and digital elevation models (DEMs).
- Register and analyze point cloud data from laser scanners for detailed modeling.
- Integrate field data with CAD software (such as AutoCAD Civil 3D or MicroStation) and industry-standard GIS software (such as ArcGIS or QGIS) to manage geographic information, perform spatial analysis, and produce high-quality thematic maps and technical reports.
- Ensure the accuracy, integrity, and completeness of all spatial data.
- Adhere to safety protocols during field operations in various weather conditions and terrains.
Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in Geomatics, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geomatics Engineering Technology, Surveying, or a closely related field.
- Robust working knowledge of GIS software (e.g., ESRI ArcGIS, QGIS) and CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D).
- Experience with point cloud processing software (e.g., Leica Cyclone, Trimble RealWorks) and drone processing software (e.g., Pix4D, DroneDeploy, Agisoft Metashape) is highly valued.
- Practical experience operating traditional surveying instruments (total stations, RTK GPS/GNSS), UAVs/drones, and terrestrial 3D laser scanners (e.g., Leica, Trimble, Faro).
- Valid drone pilot certificate (e.g., Transport Canada Advanced Operations or FAA Part 107) is highly desirable.
- Valid driver’s licence is required.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities, keen attention to detail, and a solid understanding of spatial data analysis.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills to convey complex technical information effectively.
- Physical fitness and endurance for fieldwork in various weather conditions and terrains.
