Senior Software Engineer – Architecture

Vancouver, Canada (Hybrid) JUDI.AI

Who we are.

At JUDI.AI, we’re on a mission to help transform small business dreams into vibrant communities. As a fast-paced fintech startup, we provide financial institutions with the tools to better understand and serve small businesses. Our values of Caring, Innovative, and Trustworthy guide everything we do, from our products to our culture.

We’re growing quickly, and our Engineering team builds much of the innovation at the heart of JUDI.AI. If you’re looking to apply your skills to impactful real-world problems while helping shape the future of small business lending, we’d love to meet you

Who we are looking for.

We are looking for a hands-on, forward thinking software developer. We offer a hybrid work policy based in the Vancouver area, working from our office in the downtown core. While you do not need to have a banking or fintech background, having an interest in banking and finance would be great. You are the kind of person who takes the time to listen, to build relationships and to get stuff done.

What you will do.

In this role you'll shape and implement the technical design of JUDI's platform — designing service APIs, building and refactoring production code across backend and frontend, reviewing architecture-impacting changes, and partnering with product teams to turn ambiguous requirements into practical technical designs.

Your responsibilities.

Technical

- Design clear, consistent REST APIs and service contracts using OpenAPI-first thinking;
- Review API contracts, database schema changes, configuration, dependencies, and cross-service design decisions;
- Build and refactor production code across backend services, frontend applications, and shared platform workflows;
- Help evolve a service-based architecture with loose coupling, service autonomy, statelessness, composability, and clear data ownership;
- Partner with product teams to turn ambiguous requirements into practical technical designs;

- Work comfortably in a up-to-date cloud-based infrastructure: identity, observability, CI/CD, deployments, secrets, networking, reliability, and operational debugging;
- Document design decisions, implementation guidance, migration plans, and engineering standards clearly enough for other teams to follow;
- Use AI coding agents, AI code review, log investigation tools, and prompt-driven workflows as part of daily engineering work.

Quality

- Strengthen test strategy around API behavior, integration points, regression safety, and maintainable test data;
- Own quality through rigorous, high-signal code review that surfaces architecture risks, hidden coupling, weak tests, security concerns, and unclear contracts.

Qualifications and Skills Must-have Skills

- Strong API design judgment: REST semantics and resource modeling;
- Strong code design: readable abstractions, clear boundaries, testable services, safe refactoring, and pragmatic tradeoff decisions;
- Strong application security fundamentals: authentication, authorization, OAuth/OIDC/JWT flows, OWASP Top 10, secure secret handling, safe logging, CI risks, least privilege, and protection of sensitive customer data;
- AI fluency: comfortable using AI agents for implementation, review, debugging, documentation, test generation, codebase exploration, and AI skill creation while still applying senior engineering judgment;
- Experience with one or more backend or full-stack languages and frameworks such as TypeScript, JavaScript, React, C#/.NET, or similar;
- Ability to reason across distributed systems, service contracts, data ownership, authentication, deployment, and operational behavior;

- High ownership in code review: able to spot architecture risks, hidden coupling, weak tests, security concerns, and unclear contracts;
- Strong written communication for technical docs, PR explanations, decision records, and cross-team guidance.

Nice-to-have experience

- Third-party platform integrations such as Auth0, DocuSign, Flinks, Yodlee, Equifax, Experian, or similar external services;
- Cloud infrastructure, containerized services, infrastructure as code, secrets management, observability, and production support;
- CI/CD best practices: automated testing, dependency scanning, security scanning, branch protection, release automation, and repeatable deployment workflows;
- Experience modernizing legacy services while keeping production behavior stable.

The job qualifications listed above are guidelines, not hard and fast rules. If you are excited by the position and interested in what we do, feel free to apply even if you don’t fit all the qualifications noted. JUDI.AI is an equal opportunity employer committed to talent and diversity. We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.

What success looks like

Within the first 90 days, this person should be able to independently review architecture-impacting PRs, design or critique service APIs, contribute production changes across multiple areas of the platform, write clear implementation guidance, and use AI tooling to accelerate work without creating review noise or risky shortcuts.

Why Join Us

- Be part of a mission-driven startup transforming how small businesses access credit.
- Work closely with a talented and supportive team that values both technical rigor and collaboration.
- Hybrid setup: work from our downtown Vancouver office with the flexibility to work remotely.
- Opportunity to learn fast, grow your skills, and make an outsized impact at an early stage of company growth.
