The School of Social Work and Human Service (Faculty of Education and Social Work) at Thompson Rivers University invites applications for one sessional lecturer to teach the course HUMS 2220 – Theoretical Foundations in Human Service Practice (3,0,0). The course is delivered in-person at the Kamloops campus on Fridays from 8:30 to 11:20 between September 8, 2026 and December 23rd 2026.

HUMS 2220 Calendar Description

Students are introduced to various theories for human service practice. By examining a range of theories appropriate to skilled practice, the link between theory and practice is established. Participants integrate theories into their practice framework and investigate the suitability of various theories in practice with individuals, families, groups and communities.

Educational Objectives/Learning Outcomes

1. Examine the relationship between theory and practice
2. Apply the principles of behavioural, psychodynamic, humanistic, and systemic theories in practice.
3. Describe and integrate normative developmental, cultural and gender perspectives into the process of change within the context of practice.
4. Explore and express a current theoretical approach, perspective, and application.
5. Compare and contrast how the helping relationships is formed and informed by therapeutic approaches.





QUALIFICATIONS
- A doctoral degree in a relevant discipline with a graduate credential in social work or child and youth care is preferred. The minimum academic qualification is a master’s degree in social work or child and youth care.
- Successful teaching experience in post-secondary institutions required. Experience teaching entry level students preferred.
- A minimum of five years of related practice experience in human service settings is required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the theoretical foundations of human service practice required.
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills required.
- An ability to demonstrate experience integrating Indigenous knowledge and teaching methods (TRC CA 62) is required.
- Proven skills in building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect (TRC CA 63) are required.
- Teaching excellence, including developing culturally appropriate curricula (TRC CA 10) is required.
- Candidates must provide evidence of their ability to commit to creating time and space for relationships based on respect as human beings, supporting and embracing differences with kindness, love, and respect (NIMMIWG, 15.7).
