Subject Matter Expert, Event Planning and Management

Independent Contractor | Remote within Canada

Campus Support is seeking an experienced Event Planning and Management Subject Matter Expert (SME) to review and validate course materials for CDI College's Event Planning and Management diploma program.

Position Overview The SME will work with an Instructional Designer who is responsible for developing and organizing the course content. The SME's role is not to create the courses from scratch. Instead, the SME will determine whether the materials are accurate, current, relevant to professional practice, and appropriate for students preparing to enter the event industry.

The diploma program covers the planning, design, production, marketing, management, and evaluation of live, virtual, and hybrid events. Subject areas include attendee engagement, sustainability, design and décor, food and beverage services, entertainment and production, event marketing, sports events, sponsorship, destination and global events, risk management, and the use of artificial intelligence in event planning.

Scope of Work For each assigned course, the SME will receive a complete course content package. A typical package will include:

- A course outline, including learning objectives and the course structure
- Approximately three to five assignments and associated grading criteria
- A set of materials for each course session, including external readings, original instructional readings, educational video scripts, and applied learning activities

Outside the normal scope: question-bank creation, LMS development, and general document formatting.

Responsibilities

- Review course content for factual accuracy, currency, completeness, and professional relevance.
- Confirm that the course adequately prepares students for current workplace expectations in event planning and management.

- Verify that course and session objectives are appropriately addressed by the readings, scripts, activities, and assignments.
- Identify missing, outdated, misleading, or insufficiently developed content.
- Evaluate whether instructional examples, terminology, processes, tools, and recommended practices reflect the contemporary event industry.
- Review assignments for authenticity, feasibility, clarity, and alignment with expected professional tasks.
- Assess whether activities provide meaningful opportunities for students to apply course concepts.
- Review the appropriateness of AI tools and AI-related practices included in the curriculum.
- Identify concerns related to ethics, privacy, accessibility, inclusion, sustainability, safety, legal requirements, or Canadian industry context.
- Recommend specific revisions where materials require improvement.
- Clearly approve, conditionally approve, or reject each reviewed content component.
- Respond to reasonable follow-up questions from the Instructional Designer.

Feedback should be practical and actionable. Where changes are recommended, the SME should explain the concern and indicate what should be corrected, added, removed, or reconsidered.

Deliverables

- Written feedback on the complete course package
- Recommended corrections and improvements
- Identification of significant content gaps
- Confirmation that the materials align with the course objectives
- Confirmation that the content reflects current workplace theory, technology, and practice
- Final approval, conditional approval, or rejection of the reviewed materials

The SME is not normally expected to rewrite substantial sections or develop new course materials. Minor corrections, replacement examples, recommended sources, or suggested language may be provided where useful.

Required Qualifications

- Significant professional experience in event planning, coordination, production, or management
- Demonstrated knowledge of the event lifecycle, from initial concept and budgeting through execution and post-event evaluation
- Experience with several event types, such as conferences, conventions, festivals, corporate events, weddings, exhibitions, fundraising events, sports events, entertainment events, or virtual and hybrid events
- Current knowledge of event-industry practices, technologies, risks, and professional standards
- Strong written communication and critical-review skills
- The ability to distinguish between minor editorial issues and substantive content problems
- The ability to provide clear, constructive, and specific feedback
- The ability to complete work independently and meet agreed-upon deadlines
- Residency in Canada

Preferred Qualifications

- A diploma, degree, postgraduate credential, or professional certification related to event management, hospitality, tourism, marketing, business, communications, or a related field
- Experience teaching, training, mentoring, or developing educational materials
- Experience reviewing curricula, textbooks, skilled resources, or assessment materials
- Experience working in the Canadian event industry
- Knowledge of accessibility, sustainability, risk management, privacy, and inclusive event design
- Experience using event-management platforms, virtual-event technologies, registration systems, marketing tools, analytics, or AI-enabled event-planning tools
- Broad experience across multiple event-planning specializations
