Are you a curious and analytical problem-solver with a passion for machine learning, emerging energy technologies and innovation? Reporting to the Technical Manager, Emerging Technology, the Technical Specialist, Emerging Technology plays a key role in researching, evaluating, and supporting the implementation of innovative solutions that enhance the performance of Alectra’s distribution grid.
This role contributes to the development and deployment of cutting-edge initiatives including microgrids, electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, low-carbon communities, Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems (DERMS), Virtual Power Plant (VPP) platforms, and advanced data analytics solutions. What you’ll do Research, Innovation &
- Technology Evaluation Conduct market research, technology assessments, and technical evaluations on emerging grid technologies (e.g., EVs, microgrids, DERMS, VPPs, and net-zero solutions)
Monitor industry trends and support technology intelligence efforts to inform innovation strategies
Participate in industry events, conferences, and site visits to stay current on advancements Solution Design &
- Integration Support the design and architecture of emerging technology solutions for integration into the distribution grid
Assist in developing system models and single-line diagrams aligned with operational requirements
Contribute to setting the strategic direction for grid technology systems and applications Deployment, Commissioning &
- Operations Support field deployment, commissioning, and verification of smart grid and emerging technology solutions
Assist with measurement and validation activities to ensure system performance and reliability
Maintain and support Alectra’s fleet of EV chargers, microgrids, nano grids, and IoT devices across service territories and customer sites Data Analysis &
- Reporting Perform data aggregation and analysis to support grid innovation and operational improvements
Develop documentation, user guides, and technical reports for implemented solutions

Education &
- Technical Knowledge Degree in Electrical Engineering
Knowledge of electrical distribution systems and smart grid technologies
Understanding of communication systems (e.g., serial, Ethernet) and protocols such as Modbus, IEC 61850, and DNP3
Experience with data analytics and interpreting technical data
Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools, including advanced Excel and Visio Experience 2 to 3 years of related experience, ideally within energy, utilities, or a related field
Experience with communication networks is considered an asset Skills &
