About Working Gear Clothing Society

Working Gear Clothing Society is a registered Canadian charity that helps people overcome barriers to employment by providing free workwear, personal protective equipment, interview clothing, and other employment-related supports.

Working in partnership with more than 180 referral agencies throughout the Lower Mainland, Working Gear helps over 2000 people enter or re-enter the workforce with confidence, dignity, and the equipment they need to succeed .

Board of Directors

Working Gear Clothing Society’s Board of Directors is responsible for providing governance and strategic direction for Working Gear, a registered charitable organization. Board members bring diverse and varied skills, expertise, and competencies - including policy, fundraising, donor and governmental relations, human resources, and finance - to support Working Gear’s strategic objectives. Board members' values should align with Working Gear’s vision, purpose, and core commitments.

About the Chance

Working Gear Clothing Society is seeking an experienced financial leader to serve as Treasurer and join its volunteer Board of Directors for 2026- 2028 term. The Treasurer will provide financial oversight and stewardship, support strong governance and regulatory compliance, and help the Board make informed strategic decisions, as Working Gear continues to grow.

This is a volunteer governance position.

Key Responsibilities The Treasurer provides financial leadership and governance oversight to the Board of Directors, working collaboratively with the Board Chair, Executive Director, Bookkeeper, Finance Committee (when established), and external advisors.

Key responsibilities include

- Champion the Society's vision, mission, and values, and fulfill the fiduciary responsibilities of a member of the Board of Directors and Treasurer.
- Provide strategic financial leadership and advice to the Board,



including oversight of the Foundation's financial sustainability and long-term financial planning.
- Exercise sound fiduciary oversight and uphold the highest standards of ethical governance.
- Lead the development of the annual operating budget and financial plan in collaboration with the Executive Director for Board approval, and monitor financial performance throughout the year.
- Oversee financial reporting, accounting processes, banking, investments, and internal financial controls in collaboration with the Society’s bookkeeper.
- Ensure the Society meets all financial, regulatory, and charitable reporting requirements, including annual financial statements, GST filings, CRA charitable reporting, and audit requirements.
- Review and provide financial oversight of significant contracts, grant agreements, sponsorship initiatives, and major projects as appropriate.
- Present regular financial reports and recommendations to the Board to support effective governance and decision-making.
- Serve as one authorized signing officer of the Society.
- Chair the Finance Committee, when established, and support the continued strengthening of the Society’s financial governance practices.

Time Commitment Periodic Finance Committee meetings, as required:

- Monthly Board meetings
- Approximately 8–12 hours per month, with additional time during budget preparation, year-end financial reporting, and the annual audit.
- Attendance at the Society’s Annual General Meeting and occasional Society events is expected.

Term We are looking for Board members who are able to commit to a two-year term. The additional officer position of Treasurer is for a one-year term,



renewable for a second term.

Other Board Responsibilities

As a member of the Board of Directors, the Treasurer is expected to:

Contribute to the strategic direction and governance of the Society, ensuring decisions align with its vision, mission, and values.

Serve as an ambassador for the Society by promoting its mission, building relationships, and supporting fundraising and partnership development.

Stay informed about emerging trends, risks, and opportunities that impact the charitable and nonprofit sector.

Qualifications and Experience The ideal candidate will bring:

o A professional accounting designation (CPA) or equivalent senior financial leadership experience.

o Experience in financial management, budgeting, financial reporting, and internal controls.

o An understanding of governance, fiduciary responsibilities, and the role of a Board Treasurer.

o Experience in the charitable or nonprofit sector is an asset.

o Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

o The ability to provide strategic financial advice while working collaboratively with a volunteer Board and senior leadership.

Experience supporting organizational growth, fundraising, or strategic initiatives would be considered an asset.
