Job Title: Civil Engineer (Professional of Record – Electrical Distribution)
Job Description
This role offers an experienced Intermediate or Senior Civil Engineer (P.Eng.) the opportunity to serve as the Professional of Record for civil engineering deliverables supporting utility power distribution projects. You will provide technical leadership and professional accountability for civil designs associated with underground electrical distribution infrastructure, ensuring compliance with utility standards, municipal requirements, applicable codes, and skilled practice obligations. The position focuses on underground electrical utility infrastructure and involves close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams in a hybrid work environment.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited university.
- Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC), or eligible for equivalent provincial registration.
- Minimum five (5) years of demonstrated civil engineering experience supporting electrical distribution utility infrastructure projects.
- Minimum five (5) years of direct experience in the design and delivery of underground electrical distribution civil works.
- Previous experience acting as Civil Engineer of Record or Professional of Record on BC Hydro projects.
- Demonstrated experience applying BC Hydro standards, specifications, and utility engineering requirements.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D for civil design and drafting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for documentation, reporting, and analysis.
- Strong understanding of civil construction practices associated with underground utility installations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for coordination with internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License (or provincial equivalent) to support travel to project sites.
- Ability to pass required Drug and Alcohol Screening.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with underground duct banks, including layout, design, and constructability considerations.
- Experience with utility trenches and cable routing infrastructure for electrical distribution systems.
- Experience with trenchless utility crossings and trenchless duct installations.
- Experience with the design of electrical vaults and manholes for underground distribution systems.
- Experience designing transformer foundations, including structural and constructability aspects.
- Experience designing switchgear and equipment foundations for electrical distribution facilities.
- Experience with roadway and utility crossings related to electrical distribution projects.
- Experience designing retaining structures associated with utility projects.
- Experience with underground utility coordination and conflict resolution in congested corridors.
- Experience supporting BC Hydro Distribution Capital Programs or similar utility capital programs.
- Experience preparing sealed engineering deliverables as a Professional of Record.
- Experience performing field reviews and providing construction support services for civil works.
- Working knowledge of MMCD standards and municipal permitting processes.
- Background or exposure to distribution engineering and power systems.
- Experience in overhead (OH) and underground (UG)
distribution design is an asset.
- Familiarity with tools such as SPIDAcalc and DAD is considered an asset.
- Experience in field engineering related to electrical distribution projects.
- Interest in mentoring and supporting Engineers-in-Training (EITs) and junior staff.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the Professional of Record for civil engineering deliverables associated with electrical distribution utility projects.
- Review, approve, and seal civil engineering designs in accordance with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC) professional practice requirements.
- Lead and oversee civil engineering design activities for underground electrical distribution infrastructure.
- Perform engineering calculations, detailed design reviews, and constructability assessments to ensure robust and buildable designs.
- Ensure all designs comply with BC Hydro standards, municipal requirements, applicable codes, and industry best practices.
- Prepare and review engineering reports, technical memoranda, permit submissions, and design criteria documents.
- Oversee and mentor designers and junior engineers involved in project delivery to support their technical development.
- Conduct quality assurance and quality control reviews of drawings, calculations, and project documentation.
- Coordinate with utility representatives, municipalities, regulatory agencies, contractors, and other project stakeholders to support successful project execution.
- Provide technical support during construction, including field reviews and timely responses to requests for information.
- Support project planning, scheduling, cost estimating, and risk management activities for distribution projects.
- Participate in project meetings and technical reviews, providing clear input and recommendations.
- Travel within British Columbia as required to support project needs and field activities.
- Successfully complete required Drug and Alcohol Screening as a condition of performing project work.

This is a Permanent position based out of New Westminster, BC. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $130000.00 - $150000.00/yr. Workplace Type
