This competition is open to current employees of Saanich.

The District of Saanich is seeking an experienced Coordinator, Fleet Police Mechanic to perform specialized mechanical work for the Saanich Police Department. Fleet Services is responsible for all aspects of the operation, planning, and compliance of the municipal fleet assets and a provincially regulated Preventative Maintenance Facility. The successful candidate provides service, maintenance, welding, electrical and fabrication work on a wide variety of Saanich Police vehicles, and equipment, coordinates and plans safe work practices and liaises with the Saanich Police Department to complete quality control inspections, up-fitting, and delivery of new fleet vehicles.

The Coordinator, Fleet Police Mechanic establishes preventative maintenance schedules, monitors servicing requirements, coordinates work with certified mechanics, manufacturers, subcontractors, dealerships, and parts suppliers, and ensures vehicles are maintained to required operational and safety standards. Duties include researching and ordering parts, coordinating vehicle up-fitting, using online manuals and dealership resources for repair and warranty information, maintaining servicing logs, and obtaining operator reports.

The role also performs skilled mechanical and technical work, including diagnostic analysis, repairs to electrical, electronic, ignition, and mechanical systems, removal and replacement of units and parts, auto body repairs, fabrication, welding, soldering, painting, wiring, and preparation of surfaces for finishing.



The position may also conduct Motor Vehicle Incident mechanical inspections as directed by Saanich Police and Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program inspections, where required.

Requirements include Grade 12 or equivalent; Certificate of Apprenticeship or Trades Qualification as automotive, commercial transport or heavy-duty technician; Authorized Inspector with Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE); Five years of experience in applicable trade including one-year supervisory experience in a related operational work area and a Valid Class 3 BC Driver’s Licence with air brake endorsement. Completion of Microsoft word or Excel course or equivalent is an asset. Employment is subject to provision of a satisfactory Enhanced Police Information check no older than 6 months. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
