Help Students Turn Their Ideas Into Strong Writing

Sylvan Learning Centre is looking for an engaging Writing Teacher / Tutor who can help students become clearer, more confident and more independent writers.

This isn't primarily a creative-writing position.

We're looking for someone who can help students develop the practical writing skills they need for school - from constructing strong sentences and organized paragraphs to planning, drafting, revising and editing essays and assignments.

You'll also have opportunities to help students develop their voice and creativity. The goal is to teach students not simply what to write, but how to organize their thinking and communicate it effectively.

You'll teach using Sylvan's established programs and instructional materials in a supportive learning environment.

What You'll Teach

Depending on a student's age and learning needs, instruction may include:

- Sentence structure and sentence variety
- Grammar, punctuation and capitalization
- Paragraph development and organization
- Brainstorming and generating ideas
- Planning and outlining
- Developing clear main ideas and supporting details
- Introductions, body paragraphs and conclusions
- Opinion and persuasive writing
- Expository and informational writing
- Narrative and creative writing
- Responses to literature and texts
- Essay structure and development
- Using evidence to support ideas
- Research and school assignments
- Revising for clarity, organization and content
- Editing and proofreading
- Vocabulary and word choice
- Writing clearly for different purposes and audiences

This role requires someone who can teach the writing process: planning, drafting, revising and editing, rather than simply correcting a student's finished work.

What You'll Do

As a Sylvan Writing Teacher, you'll:

- Deliver engaging writing instruction to students individually and in small groups
- Teach students strategies they can apply to their everyday school writing
- Follow Sylvan programs and individualized student learning plans
- Review and prepare Sylvan instructional materials before sessions
- Help students organize their ideas before they begin writing
- Teach grammar and writing conventions in the context of effective communication
- Guide students through drafting, revising, editing and proofreading




- Adapt explanations and instruction to different ages, abilities and learning needs
- Provide specific, constructive and encouraging feedback on student writing
- Help students become more independent rather than simply correcting their work for them
- Evaluate and record student progress
- Communicate student needs and observations to Centre staff
- Create a positive, encouraging learning environment
- Participate in periodic staff meetings and ongoing training
- Complete Sylvan certification training for the programs you teach

What We're Looking ForRequired
- A completed four-year degree or equivalent post-secondary education
- Strong knowledge of grammar, sentence structure, paragraph development and academic writing
- Ability to teach students how to plan, organize, draft, revise and edit their writing
- Strong written and spoken English communication skills
- Ability to explain writing concepts clearly and in age-appropriate ways
- Ability to provide constructive feedback while maintaining student confidence
- Solid interpersonal skills and an encouraging approach to working with children and teens
- Dependability, organization and the ability to manage multiple students and tasks
- A genuine interest in helping students become stronger, more independent writers

Assets, Not Requirements
- Previous teaching, tutoring, mentoring or writing-instruction experience
- One or more years of experience working with students
- Experience teaching elementary and/or middle-school writing
- Experience supporting high-school academic writing and essays
- Familiarity with Ontario Language/English curriculum expectations
- Experience teaching students who struggle with written organization or written expression
- Ontario Certified Teacher (OCT) designation, current or expired
- OCT certification is not required.
