Job Description:
Director, Software Engineering
Position Summary
Our client is seeking a Director, Software Engineering to lead the development, delivery, and continuous improvement of software platforms and business-critical systems.
This role is responsible for strengthening engineering practices, improving delivery consistency, enhancing software quality, and ensuring operational reliability. The Director will provide leadership across application development, platform services, DevOps, and quality assurance while balancing modernization initiatives with the stability of existing environments.
Working closely with business and technology leaders, this position will help drive innovation, improve engineering performance, and support the successful delivery of strategic initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Leadership
- Lead and experienced software engineering practices, standards, and delivery processes.
- Improve code quality, delivery predictability, and team effectiveness.
- Establish engineering metrics, reporting, and performance measures.
- Ensure alignment with security, architecture, and business priorities.
Application & Platform Delivery
- Oversee the development of web applications, APIs, integrations, and internal systems.
- Improve application lifecycle management and release consistency.
- Support modernization of customer-facing and internal platforms.
- Promote automation, cloud technologies, and modern development practices.
Systems Modernization & Reliability
- Provide leadership across legacy and modern application environments.
- Balance operational stability with long-term modernization goals.
- Improve scalability, maintainability, and system performance.
- Support platform enhancements and integrations while minimizing business disruption.
DevOps & Quality
- Strengthen CI/CD, automation,
release management, and DevOps practices.
- Improve testing standards and adoption of quality assurance automation.
- Enhance monitoring, incident management, and system reliability.
- Promote efficient, sustainable engineering workflows.
Vendor & Delivery Management
- Manage relationships with external development partners and vendors.
- Establish delivery standards, governance, and accountability.
- Support vendor selection, performance management, and project oversight.
Leadership
- Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing engineering team.
- Develop future leaders and strengthen organizational capability.
- Foster accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Partner with business and technology stakeholders to support strategic initiatives.
- Provide visibility into engineering performance, risks, and priorities.

Qualifications

- 5+ years of leadership experience managing engineering teams.
- Experience leading development across up-to-date and legacy technology environments.
- Strong understanding of software development methodologies, DevOps, and delivery practices.
- Proven ability to improve engineering maturity, delivery effectiveness, and team performance.
- Experience managing external vendors and development partners.
- Strong communication, stakeholder management, and leadership skills.
- Experience in a complex or regulated environment is considered an asset.
