The School of Social Work and Human Service (Faculty of Education and Social Work) at Thompson Rivers University invites applications for one sessional lecturer to teach SOCW 3540 – Indigenous People and Human Service (3,0,0). The course is delivered in-person at the Kamloops campus on Tuesdays from 17:30 to 20:20 between September 8 and December 23rd.
SOCW 3540 Calendar Description

Students critically examine the historical process of colonization in Canada, the resulting barriers embedded in policy and practice, and alternative ways of viewing the social-psychological position of Indigenous People in Canadian society. Contemporary issues and the movement toward self-determination are discussed in relation to social work theory and practice.

Educational Objectives/Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate understanding of diverse Indigenous perspectives through working in circle through class dialogue, participation & reflective critical analysis.
2. Demonstrate and apply an understanding of the history and concept of colonization.
3. Identify the historical colonial policies and practices in Canada towards Indigenous people.
4. Demonstrate awareness of how colonial policies and practices impact Indigenous people today.
5. Display an awareness of the dynamics of colonization (issues of internalized power, privilege or racism, use of language, Indigenous government and culture etc.) for both the oppressed and oppressors.
6. Reflect upon one’s own personal awareness and experiences of privilege,



oppression and racism in relation to Indigenous people, and make transparent connections to your own social location and emerging social work practice.
7. Display an awareness of the concept of self-determination, the goals toward self-determination, as well as, the structural barriers, strengths and resource issues that exist for Indigenous people.

QUALIFICATIONS

- An earned doctorate in a relevant discipline with a graduate degree in social work is preferred. The minimum academic qualification is a master’s degree in social work.
- Successful teaching experience in post-secondary institutions is preferred.
- A minimum of five years of related practice experience with Indigenous communities is required.
- Self-identification and lived experience as an Indigenous person is required, experience with communities within Secwépemc'ulucw is preferred.
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills required.
- Demonstrated experience in integrating Indigenous knowledge and teaching methods (TRC CA 62) is required.
- Proven skills in building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect (TRC CA 63) are required.
- Teaching excellence, including developing culturally appropriate curricula (TRC CA 10), is required.
- Candidates must provide evidence of their ability to commit to creating time and space for relationships based on respect as human beings, supporting and embracing differences with kindness, love, and respect (NIMMIWG, 15.7).
