Job Summary

1Courier Inc. is hiring 3 reliable, professional courier drivers for dedicated weekday delivery routes within the City of Ottawa.

Each driver will be assigned primarily to one dedicated geographic route:

- West Ottawa
- East Ottawa
- Central Ottawa

The work involves picking up internal mail, envelopes, parcels, equipment and other approved materials from a central Ottawa-area location and delivering to multiple institutional and administrative sites throughout the city.

The successful candidate must provide their own minivan, fuel, vehicle maintenance and automobile insurance.

Schedule

Primary schedule:

- Monday
- Tuesday
- Thursday
- Friday
- Approximately 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
- Approximately 6 hours per day
- Approximately 24 hours per week

Drivers must be available to start from a designated central pickup location in the Ottawa/Nepean area each morning and return to the same location at the end of the route.

Additional work may occasionally be available during peak periods, summer operations or for miscellaneous courier deliveries.

Compensation

$30.00 per hour

Typical daily earnings:

Up to 6 hours × $30 = approximately $180 per day

Typical weekly earnings based on four scheduled days:

Approximately $720 per week

This is an independent contractor position. The contractor is responsible for their own:

- Vehicle
- Fuel
- Vehicle maintenance and repairs
- Automobile insurance
- Applicable taxes/HST obligations
- Other vehicle operating expenses

Vehicle Requirement

Candidates must have reliable access to a:

Minivan

The vehicle must:

- Be clean, safe and mechanically reliable
- Have sufficient cargo capacity for route materials
- Carry a 2-wheel hand truck/dolly
- Have valid registration and insurance
- Be appropriately insured for courier/delivery work

Driver Responsibilities

The successful driver will:





- Report to the assigned pickup location on time
- Load and organize materials for the assigned route
- Complete the assigned West, East or Central Ottawa route
- Deliver envelopes, parcels and approved materials
- Pick up outgoing materials from assigned locations
- Return collected materials to the designated central location
- Complete all pickups and deliveries on the same service day
- Protect all materials while they are in your possession
- Keep the vehicle secured during deliveries
- Follow established route instructions and delivery procedures
- Maintain professional conduct at all customer locations
- Communicate immediately with 1Courier dispatch regarding delays, incidents or delivery problems
- Follow all applicable traffic laws and customer-site policies

Important Vehicle Safety Requirements

At every customer location, drivers must:

- Turn the vehicle off
- Remove the vehicle key
- Not leave a running vehicle unattended
- Secure/lock the vehicle when it is left unattended

Required Qualifications

Applicants must have:

- Valid Ontario Class G driver's licence
- Reliable minivan
- Valid vehicle registration
- Valid automobile insurance appropriate for courier work
- Clean and protected driving habits
- Ability to communicate clearly in English
- Ability to understand written and verbal instructions
- Excellent attendance and punctuality
- Strong organizational skills
- Professional appearance and behaviour
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to follow a fixed delivery route and schedule
- Ability to safely load, unload and move courier materials
- Ability to use a 2-wheel hand truck

Background Screening





Successful candidates must be willing to provide a satisfactory Criminal Background Check and any additional screening that may be required for access to institutional facilities.

Identification

Approved drivers will be required to carry/display company-issued photo identification while performing routes.

Physical Requirements

Candidates should be comfortable:

- Entering and exiting their vehicle frequently
- Walking into customer and institutional buildings
- Lifting and carrying envelopes, boxes and parcels
- Using a hand truck/dolly
- Handling occasional equipment or parcels weighing up to approximately 60 lbs
