About us

Opal Hospitality Inc. is a growing multi-property hotel management company operating branded hotels across Canada and the United States.

The role

We are looking for a Hotel Accountant. You keep the books clean, ensure our coding and formatting is compliant with USALI, handle the day to day accounting and payments, close the month, and make sure the numbers are accurate and supported before financials go out.

You will work with our outsourced bookkeeping team, internal administrative support, and hotel General Managers.

What you’ll do

Day to day accounting

- Post journal entries and maintain accurate, well supported general ledger activity
- Review coding and correct errors so the books stay clean for financial reporting
- Prepare correcting and catch-up entries as needed
- Maintain organized month-end support files by property
- Request monthly financial information and supporting documents from hotel General Managers and follow up until received
- Record activity into Nimble

Accounts payable and payments

- Review and approve vendor invoices and expense coding
- Prepare and process cheque runs and EFT payments
- Vendor setup and maintenance
- Reconcile vendor statements and resolve discrepancies
- Credit card and expense reconciliation
- Monitor payment timing against cash availability

Month-end close and reporting

- Close the month across all entities, Canadian and US
- Own accrual discipline and keep the close calendar on track
- Complete monthly balance sheet reconciliations for every account
- Maintain prepaid, deferred revenue, and deferred liability schedules and their amortization
- Maintain fixed asset and depreciation schedules




- Monitor AR aging by property and follow up on aged balances
- Post intercompany entries across CA and US entities
- Clear suspense and clearing account balances
- Prepare monthly financial packages for the Director

USALI and coding accuracy

- Code all activity in line with USALI
- Maintain the chart of accounts to USALI standards across properties
- Confirm PMS-to-GL and payroll-to-GL mapping stays correct as new revenue and expense types arise

Tax and compliance

- Prepare and file HST/GST returns through CRA for individual properties
- Support US state and local sales and lodging tax filings
- Property tax accruals and payment scheduling
- Ensure payroll is recorded accurately in line with Canadian and US requirements, including employer portions of CPP, EI, EHT, and US federal and state payroll taxes
- Ensure workers compensation items (WSIB, WCB, and US state equivalents) are accrued and expensed correctly by property and department
- Reconcile payroll clearing and liability accounts monthly
- Support T4A, T5, and 1099 issuance

Year-end

- Compile and organize year-end audit items, working papers, and supporting schedules
- Respond to auditor requests and provide explanations of account activity

Working with the team





- Review work prepared by the outsourced bookkeeping team and verify accuracy before financials are finalized
- Answer coding and treatment questions and provide explicit written direction
- Flag recurring issues to the Director with supporting detail

What you bring

- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Commerce, or a related accounting discipline from a Canadian institution is required
- CPA designation is preferred
- 3+ years of hotel accounting experience
- Canadian accounting experience is required
- Working knowledge of USALI is required
- CRA filing experience (HST/GST) is required
- Restaurant and food and beverage accounting experience is preferred
- Multi-entity accounting experience
- Solid grasp of accounting principles, GAAP and ASPE
- Advanced Excel
- Strong technology aptitude and a track record of learning new bookkeeping systems quickly
- Exceptionally organized, with the discipline to track open items and close them out
- Able to research a question, find the right answer, and explain it clearly

Assets

- US accounting experience
- Cross-border CA/US entity experience
- Franchise brand experience (Marriott, Hilton, IHG)
- Hospitality accounting systems (Nimble, M3, Inn-Flow, or similar)

Pay: $50,000.00-$70,000.00 per year
