Store Manager – Play It Again Sports

The Store Manager is responsible for the overall operation and success of the Play It Again Sports store. This role leads daily retail operations, delivers exceptional customer service, drives sales, manages inventory, and develops a high-performing team. The Store Manager creates a welcoming setting for customers buying, selling, and trading quality new and used sporting equipment while supporting Play It Again Sports' commitment to sustainability. By extending the life of sports gear through reuse and recycling, the store helps reduce waste, makes sports more affordable, and has a positive impact on the environment.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Management
- Recruit, hire, train, coach, and develop store associates.
- Schedule staff to ensure excellent customer service and operational efficiency.
- Foster a positive, team-oriented work environment.
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing feedback.
- Lead by example in customer engagement and professionalism.
Sales & Customer Experience
- Deliver outstanding customer service and resolve customer concerns promptly.
- Educate customers on the benefits of buying, selling, and trading quality used sporting goods, highlighting how reusing equipment helps reduce waste and supports environmental sustainability.
- Drive sales through effective merchandising, promotions, and team coaching.
- Build relationships with customers and encourage repeat business.
- Ensure every customer has a positive buying, selling, and trading experience.
Inventory Management
- Oversee the purchase, pricing, and trade-in of used sporting goods.
- Maintain appropriate inventory levels of new and used merchandise.
- Monitor product quality and ensure accurate pricing.
- Analyze inventory turnover and make purchasing decisions based on seasonal demand and sales trends.
Store Operations
- Manage daily opening and closing procedures.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shopping environment.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, safety standards, and loss prevention procedures.
- Oversee cash handling, deposits, and point-of-sale operations.
- Coordinate equipment maintenance and store upkeep.
- Oversee and operate the ski and snowboard service department, ensuring timely, high-quality tuning, waxing, mounting, and repairs.
- Ensure all ski binding adjustments, inspections, and service work are performed in accordance with manufacturer specifications, industry standards, and applicable certification requirements.
- Maintain service equipment, tools, and supplies to ensure safe and efficient operation.
Financial Performance
- Achieve sales, profitability, and expense control goals.
- Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and develop action plans to improve results.
- Prepare reports, manage budgets, and control operating expenses.
- Identify opportunities to increase revenue and improve operational efficiency.
Merchandising & Marketing
- Maintain attractive product displays and store presentation.
- Execute seasonal merchandising plans and promotional campaigns.
- Support local marketing initiatives and community partnerships.
- Promote the store through events, sports organizations, schools, and social media as appropriate, emphasizing the value of keeping quality sports equipment in play and out of landfills.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; post-secondary education in business or retail management is an asset.
- 3–5 years of retail management experience, preferably in sporting goods or specialty retail.
- Experience with inventory management and purchasing preferred.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Proven ability to motivate teams and achieve sales goals.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Basic computer proficiency and experience with retail POS systems.
- Knowledge of sporting goods and participation in sports is an asset.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs (23 kg).
- Frequent bending, reaching, climbing ladders, and moving merchandise.
- Ability to safely handle large sporting equipment, including bicycles, fitness equipment, hockey gear, and other oversized items.
Work Schedule
- Full-time position.
- Flexible availability, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
- Ability to work additional hours during peak retail seasons.

Pay: $60,320.00-$70,309.00 per year
