The History Department studies the past to prepare historically informed global citizens for the challenges of today and tomorrow. Responsibilities
This position is expected to be filled by an internal candidate.
Village SoHo is a six-year public history and digital humanities project to research the history of the SoHo, London, Ontario area to create a permanent outdoor exhibit in the SoHo neighbourhood and an accompanying website to disseminate additional information. This website is linked to the physical signs via a QR code. This project is in collaboration with the London Community Foundation, Indwell, Nicolson-Sheffield Architects, Murray Heritage Consulting, the City of London Culture Office and Parks and Planning, and the Village SoHo Alliance. The first step of this project will be launched September 19th, 2026 during Doors Open London and as part of the City of London’s 200th Anniversary celebrations.
The academic lead,
Professor Michelle Hamilton, seeks a GIS Technician to:
- Assist in the dissemination of academic historical research through the Village SoHo website held by the Map and Data Centre, Western Libraries
- Provide solutions using Geographical Information Science to increase the accessibility of the dissemination of this research
- Manage and resolve any outstanding technical issues after the September 19th, 2026 launch of the exhibit and website.
Qualifications
Education:
- A MSc in Geography and Environment with a specialization in Geographic Information Science research and dissemination (or in progress)
Experience:
- Previous experience in using GIS to disseminate research findings programs
- Previous experience with the Western Libraries’ Map and Data Centre and its programs
Skills, Abilities & Expertise:
- Demonstrated initiative to work independently and follow through on work assignments
- Demonstrated ability to focus on complex tasks, with strong attention to detail
- Ability to work effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
- Excellent organizational skills
