The Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge Skin Cancer Screening Clinic is an innovative, primary-care-based clinic dedicated to the early detection and prevention of skin cancer. Our comprehensive screening model combines detailed patient assessment, total-body photography, dermoscopy, and clinician review to provide patients with thorough, compassionate, and prevention-focused care.

We are seeking an experienced Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse to join our clinical team. This is a hands-on patient-care role responsible for conducting the initial nursing assessment, imaging, and lesion-documentation components of our total-body skin screening process.

Applicants must have a minimum of five years of nursing experience to be considered. Previous experience with skin assessment or dermoscopy is an asset but is not required. We will provide specialized training for the right candidate.

About the Role

From the moment a patient arrives until the case is presented to the reviewing clinician, the Skin Cancer Screening Nurse plays a central role in guiding the patient through the screening process.

Total-body examinations can feel sensitive or intimidating for some patients. The successful candidate must combine excellent clinical judgment and attention to detail with warm, empathetic communication. Protecting patient privacy and dignity, confirming consent throughout the process, and helping patients feel comfortable and respected are essential parts of this role.

What You Will DoPatient assessment and screening

- Welcome and room patients, explain the screening process, and establish a calm and reassuring clinical workplace.
- Review and confirm each patient’s medical and family history, medications, allergies, previous skin cancer history, sun exposure, and other relevant skin cancer risk factors.
- Review and confirm the patient’s informed consent for the screening process and answer questions within the nurse’s scope of practice.
- Perform total-body photography using our advanced DermEngine OptimaScan imaging technology.
- Position patients appropriately and verify that all required images have been captured clearly and consistently.
- Conduct a systematic total-body skin assessment using dermoscopy, following clinic screening protocols, to identify lesions requiring closer evaluation by the reviewing clinician.




- Capture high-quality dermoscopic photographs of lesions of concern.
- Document the relevant history and characteristics of each identified lesion, including any reported changes or symptoms.
- Review all clinical and dermoscopic images for completeness and image quality before concluding the nursing portion of the assessment.
- Prepare and deliver a clear, organized case presentation to the reviewing clinician before the clinician assesses the patient.

Patient education and treatment

- Provide thorough, individualized education about sun protection, skin cancer prevention, and appropriate sun-safety practices.
- Answer patient questions in a clear, compassionate, and evidence-informed manner.
- Reinforce clinic recommendations and follow-up instructions as directed by the reviewing clinician.
- Administer treatments such as cryotherapy when clinically appropriate, authorized under clinic directives, and within the nurse’s individual scope and competency.

Additional clinical and clinic responsibilities

Depending on clinic needs, the Skin Cancer Screening Nurse may also:

- Complete follow-up telephone calls and communicate results or instructions under clinician direction.
- Assist physicians and other clinicians with biopsies and minor procedures.
- Assess procedural or surgical sites.
- Perform wound care and suture removal.
- Document clinical encounters accurately in the electronic medical record.
- Support patient flow and help maintain a clean, organized, and patient-ready clinical environment.
- Participate in quality-improvement activities and the continued refinement of clinic screening protocols.
- Assist with other clinical and operational responsibilities required by the team.

Required Qualifications

- Current registration as an RN or RPN in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- A minimum of five years of nursing experience.
- Strong experience in direct patient care, clinical assessment, and patient education.
- Excellent clinical judgment and the ability to recognize when findings or patient concerns require escalation to a clinician.
- Exceptional attention to detail, particularly when acquiring clinical images and documenting patient information.
- Strong written documentation and verbal case-presentation skills.
- Professional, empathetic, and engaging communication skills.




- Demonstrated ability to protect patient privacy and dignity during sensitive examinations.
- An inclusive, respectful, and body-positive approach to caring for patients of different backgrounds, identities, ages, and body types.
- Comfort using digital technology, clinical imaging systems, and electronic medical records.
- Ability to follow standardized clinical protocols while adapting communication and care to the needs of each patient.
- A reliable, collaborative, and team-oriented approach.

Preferred Qualifications

The following experience would be an asset but is not required:

- Experience performing comprehensive skin assessments.
- Previous dermoscopy education, training, or clinical experience.
- Experience in dermatology, primary care, oncology, plastic surgery, or another related clinical setting.
- Experience assisting with biopsies or minor surgical procedures.
- Experience with cryotherapy, wound assessment, and suture removal.

Candidates who meet the required nursing-experience criteria but do not yet have dermoscopy or specialized skin-screening experience are encouraged to apply. Training will be provided in our screening workflow, OptimaScan technology, clinical photography standards, and dermoscopy techniques as needed.
