Children's Hearing & Speech Centre of BC (CHSC) is Western Canada’s only Listening & Spoken Language Centre, now in its 63rd year of operations. CHSC is a registered non-profit society dedicated to helping children who are deaf and hard of hearing develop listening, spoken language and communication skills. Through early intervention, education and family support, we partner with families, schools and communities to help children thrive. We are currently seeking a part-time Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing to help meet the high demand for our Itinerant services.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Team Lead, Itinerant Program, the Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing provides specialized educational support to students from Kindergarten through Grade 12 attending Group 1 and Group 2 independent schools throughout the Lower Mainland.
Working in partnership with students, families, classroom teachers, Learning Assistance staff and school-based teams, the Itinerant Teacher supports each student's listening, spoken language, communication, academic and social development while promoting successful inclusion in the school community.
This position is primarily remote and community-based, with services delivered in schools throughout the Lower Mainland. Team meetings, professional development and other Centre activities may be held periodically at Children's Hearing & Speech Centre of BC.
As an ambassador of Children's Hearing & Speech Centre of BC, the Itinerant Teacher demonstrates professionalism, reflects the Centre's vision and values, and works collaboratively to support each school's unique culture, resources and educational approach.
Key Responsibilities
Student Support
- Provide direct itinerant educational services to assigned students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- Conduct informal and standardized assessments to guide individualized goal setting.
- Deliver individualized instruction supporting listening, spoken language, literacy, academic learning and self-advocacy.
- Observe students in classroom settings and provide strategies that support participation, learning and access to instruction.
- Prepare progress reports and maintain accurate student documentation.
- Service frequency is individualized based on each student's educational needs and IEP goals and may range from weekly visits to periodic consultation.
School Partnership
- Collaborate with classroom teachers, learning assistance staff, educational assistants, administrators and school-based teams.
- Contribute to the development, implementation and review of Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
- Provide practical recommendations to support listening, communication and classroom participation.
- Share resources and provide consultation regarding hearing loss, listening and spoken language development, hearing technology and inclusive educational practices.
- Support schools in creating learning environments that promote student success while respecting each school's existing resources and practices.
Family Collaboration
- Maintain positive communication with parents and caregivers.
- Share student progress, goals and strategies that support listening and spoken language development at home.
- Participate in meetings with families as appropriate.
Hearing Technology Support
- Monitor students' hearing technology, including hearing aids, cochlear implants and FM/DM systems.
- Provide basic troubleshooting and minor equipment support, and coordinate hearing assessments or audiological services when requested.
- Liaise with community audiologists and school teams to support students' ongoing access to hearing technology.
Professional Responsibilities
- Participate in team meetings, Centre events and professional development opportunities.
- Maintain current knowledge of evidence-based practices in deaf education and Listening and Spoken Language.
- Represent Children's Hearing & Speech Centre of BC with professionalism and integrity in all school and community interactions.
Qualifications
- Valid BC Teaching Certificate.
- Certification as a Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (or eligibility for certification).
- Strong collaboration, communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining strong relationships with schools, families and colleagues.
- Experience working with children who are deaf or hard of hearing in educational settings is preferred.
Requirements
- Valid BC Driver's Licence.
- Reliable personal vehicle and the ability to travel regularly to schools throughout the Lower Mainland.
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
- Eligibility to work in Canada.
Hours of Work
This is a part-time position (approximately 0.4-0.6 FTE, depending on program needs and assigned caseload). Work hours are generally scheduled during the school day and are flexible to meet the needs of students and partner schools.
Remuneration
This is a permanent, part time position. Salary range is $72,00 - 82,000 adjusted to .4 FTE, with 2 months in the summer, two weeks winter break and two weeks spring break paid time off.
Competitive compensation will be provided based on qualifications and experience. Mileage reimbursement is provided for approved work-related travel in accordance with Centre policy.
