POSITION SUMMARY:
The Third- or Fourth-Year Automotive Service Technician Apprentice performs increasingly complex automotive maintenance, diagnosis, and repair work under the supervision of a certified Journeyperson. The position supports the safe and reliable operation of Tsuut'ina Nation's diverse fleet while continuing to develop the practical skills and technical knowledge required to complete the Automotive Service Technician apprenticeship. This includes accurately documenting work performed and promptly reporting any safety concerns or deficiencies identified.
In addition to apprentice-level repair duties, the incumbent will continue to assist with shop organization, vehicle preparation, parts handling, cleaning, and other day-to-day operational needs, while providing respectful and professional service.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Diagnostic and Repair Support – perform scheduled maintenance, inspections, and repairs on automobiles and light-duty trucks. Assist with diagnosing performance concerns. Use scan tools, service information, test equipment, and manufacturer procedures to support accurate diagnosis and repair. Remove, inspect, repair, and replace vehicle components. Perform road tests and operational checks when authorized and document findings clearly.
- Routine Maintenance and Service – complete oil changes, fluid services, tire repairs and replacements, wheel balancing, brake service, battery service, and other routine maintenance. Assist technicians with automotive, heavy-duty, trailer, small-equipment, and fleet maintenance tasks as directed. Prepare vehicles and equipment for service, inspection, repair, and return to the operating department.
- Documentation and Safety Reporting – complete work orders accurately, including labour time,
parts used, inspection results, and recommended repairs. Identify safety concerns and immediately report deficiencies, unsafe conditions, or work outside the apprentice's authorized scope.
- Shop Operations and Equipment Care – organize, clean, and maintain tools, shop equipment, work areas, parts, and supplies. Assist with receiving, tracking, delivering, and retrieving parts and supplies. Practice the safe operation of hoists, jacks, tire equipment, power tools, shop equipment, and material-handling equipment. Complete shop housekeeping duties and supply restocking.
- Health, Safety, and Compliance – follow occupational health and safety requirements, environmental procedures, shop policies, and industry best practices.
- Apprenticeship Development – participate in apprenticeship technical training, manufacturer training, safety training, shop meetings, and performance reviews. Maintain apprenticeship registration, training records, and required on-the-job hours in good standing. Demonstrate reliability, initiative, teamwork, professionalism, and continued progress toward Journeyperson certification.
- Service and Professionalism – provide respectful and professional service.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the Mechanics Shop.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
- Desired Education, Knowledge, and Experience:
o High School Diploma or GED required. o Active registration (or eligibility) as a Third- or Fourth-Year Automotive Service Technician Apprentice in Alberta.
o Successful completion of the technical training and on-the-job hours required with apprenticeship registration in good standing.
o Practical experience performing automotive maintenance, diagnosis,
and repairs appropriate to a third- or fourth-year apprentice.
o Ability to read repair manuals, wiring diagrams, service information, inspection forms, and work orders.
o Basic diagnostic ability and familiarity with scan tools, digital multimeters, and common automotive test equipment.
- Personal Attributes:
o Reliable and punctual, with a strong work ethic and willingness to follow direction and accept coaching. o Ability to work independently on assigned tasks.
o Safety-conscious and able to follow procedures.
o Ability to work cooperatively in a team workplace and communicate respectfully.
o Willingness to perform shop-support and housekeeping duties as part of the overall position
- General Employment Requirements:
o Valid Class 5 Driver's License with a satisfactory driver's abstract required o Criminal Record Check. o Physically able to lift up to 50 lbs., and perform manual tasks throughout the shift.
o Flexible schedule to accommodate off hours when required.
o Must provide own tools, box, etc.
