Overview The Good Companions is a mission-driven non-profit multi-service seniors’ centre focused on promoting and supporting the well-being, independence, and zest for living of seniors and adults with physical disabilities. Located in the heart of Ottawa, we have a wonderful assortment of social, recreational, educational, and volunteer activities as well as social and health services.

We offer in-person programming (e.g., at the centre itself, in seniors’ homes, transportation services) and virtual programming. Special programs are also available for seniors who may be frail or facing disabilities.

Our Adult Day Program is designed to:

- Enhance well-being by providing social, physical, cognitive, and recreational stimulation in a supportive small-group setting.
- Strengthen participants’ ability to remain independent for as long as possible.
- Provide respite and support to caregivers and families.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

- Provide hands-on support in delivering safe, person-centered programs and services for Adult Day Program clients.
- Assist the Adult Day Program Coordinator, staff, and volunteers in planning, developing, and implementing therapeutic programs, special events, and client services.
- In collaboration with the staff team, volunteers and PSW’s lead daily scheduled activities fostering engagement, socialization, and overall well-being.
- Provide supervision and support to clients throughout the day, ensuring their safety, comfort, dignity, and independence while participating in program activities.
- Assist clients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), such as walking, transfers, meals, and preparing for activities, according to individual care plans.
- Plan and facilitate meaningful recreational and therapeutic activities, including chair fitness, arts and crafts, cognitive stimulation, games, music, and social programming, tailored to clients' individual cognitive and physical abilities.
- Observe, assess, document, and report changes in clients' physical, cognitive, emotional, and social well-being,



communicating concerns promptly to the appropriate staff team members.
- Support clients, volunteers, students, and PSW’s by providing guidance, orientation, and ongoing assistance to ensure the quality of program delivery.
- Promote a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment by adhering to organizational policies, infection prevention and control practices, emergency procedures, and client safety protocols.
- Participate in interdisciplinary discussions, staff meetings, and ongoing education to support continuous improvement in client care and the quality of the program.

Administration

- Assists with the supervision, support, scheduling, training and orientation of volunteers, students and contract staff.
- Works with the Adult Day Program Team to collect and accurately maintain program records, client files and statistical data.

Organizational

- Fulfills The Good Companions’ Culture Statement, mission, vision, values, goals and objectives.
- Is an ally to the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
- Works with an open, friendly respectful approach towards members/clients and volunteers.
- Disseminates The Good Companions information to members/clients and community agencies.
- Complies with The Good Companions’ policies, practices and procedures, including Occupational Health and Safety.

Education

- Diploma or degree in Recreation Therapy, Gerontology, Social Services, Health Sciences, or a related field preferred.

Experience

- 1–2 years of experience supporting older adults and individuals with physical disabilities.
- Experience providing care for older adults with early- to mid-stage dementia and mild cognitive impairment.
- Knowledge of Gentle Persuasive Approach techniques.
- Skilled in safe transfer techniques and mobility assistance.

Operational Requirements

- The successful candidate will be asked to provide a current Police Record Check for Working with the Vulnerable;
- C.P.R. and First Aid Certificate, required annually.

Skills Required

- Experience supporting older adults, individuals with cognitive or physical challenges,



and their caregivers.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
- Collaborative team player with experience working in multidisciplinary environments.
- Compassionate, patient, and professional approach to care.
- Knowledge of dementia care, aging, and community support services.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, electronic documentation systems (CIMS, AlayaCare), and technology including iPads, Apple TV, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom.

Abilities

- Strong understanding of the needs, interests, and concerns of older adults and adults with disabilities.
- Ability to multitask, prioritize competing demands, and make sound decisions in fast-paced environments.
- Effective time management with the ability to coordinate workloads and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrates a respectful, inclusive, and non-judgmental approach when working with diverse populations.

Working Conditions

- Work is performed in a community-based Adult Day Program setting, operating Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.
- Occasional evening or weekend participation in special events may be required.
- Ability to perform light physical tasks, including setting up program spaces, moving light furniture and equipment, and supporting participant mobility and activities.
