Position Summary

Actalent is a global leader in engineering services and human capital solutions. We are looking for an aircraft structures SME to join our rapidly-growing team in Canada.

This role would involve an initial project supporting a customer in Western Canada, however the position would be almost exclusively remote (possibly some time on-site to kick off the project). The employee would report into an Actalent engineering manager, and have opportunities for professional growth on our engineering services team.

Our client is a recognized specialty aerospace and defense contractor, providing maintenance, repair, and overhaul as well as engineering solutions, and integrated fleet support for military, government, and commercial aircraft. The structures SME will be responsible for mentoring and guiding our client's engineering team, with a focus on Damage Tolerance Analysis, and Advanced Fatigue (crack propagation, etc). This role requires having previously led or mentored teams, and would be suitable for someone who seeks to coach and mentor versus being solely hands-on with analysis.

This is an excellent opportunity for a engineering professional who has solid experience in the industry, a recent retiree looking to continue contributing on an initial ~2 year contract, or consultant looking for their next challenge.

Role and Responsibilities

At its core, this role will involve formal mentorship and leadership to ensure our customer's resources are supported in the areas of DTA and Advanced Fatigue (crack propagation, etc). It will also involve developing methodologies from scratch in situations where OEM is not always readily available.

Other responsibilities include:

- Approve repairs, modifications, and product developments, focusing on structures in accordance with Cascade's Engineering procedures.




- Heavily involved with advanced fatigue and damage tolerance analysis
- Impact designs considering the requirements of the customer, certification authorities, and all other project constraints.
- Apply accepted engineering principles and develop innovative methods for solving engineering problems and developing design solutions.
- Follow the systems engineering approach as defined in Cascade's Systems Engineering Manual.
- Provide design guidance to management as required.
- Develop engineering data packages in support of airworthiness certification and other department purposes.
- Prepare and/or approve engineering reports and other documents in accordance with Cascade's Engineering Authorization Matrix.
- Liaise with airworthiness authorities to develop certification requirements and data necessary to demonstrate compliance.
- Review and/or approve the work of others.
- Coordinate and supervise the engineering activities of other engineering personnel and outside engineering service providers in development of engineering data.
- Ensure all certification requirements are represented in configuration control and certification data package.
- Apply principles of project management in performing engineering activities.
- Provide technical supervision of the activities of others, in developing the project scope, cost and schedule estimates, and quality requirements.
- Monitor project performance against accepted estimates.




- Implement actions to re-establish project performance to meet targets.
- Advise management on project performance.
- Provide engineering support to internal and external customers.

Requisite Skills and Experience:

- B.Sc., M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
- 15+ years’ experience working in an aerospace environment.
- 10+ years’ experience in aircraft structural analysis (primary and secondary structures)
- Experience working in a formal mentorship/teaching capacity
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team (stress/design/liaison/airworthiness).
- Advanced knowledge of aerospace static stress, fatigue and damage tolerance analysis.
- Strong working knowledge of finite element analysis (FEA), including model validation and verification.
- Experience with missing data and knowing how to do hand calcs. "First Principles thinking” will be required in situations where OEM data is not readily available.
- Experience developing or impacting methodologies (not simply running the analysis)
- Mentorship or guidance experience working with more junior team members
- Eligible for Transport Canada authorization nomination under AWM 505 with a Design Approval Organization; and/or Department of National Defence (DND) authorization nomination under the Technical Airworthiness Authority (TAA) with an Acceptable Design Organization. The incumbent wont be the ones signing and certifying - but they need to be able to support the documentation our client will require in order to submit)
