B-Pressure Welder / Fabricator – Stainless & Carbon Steel
Location: Calgary, Alberta – Shop & Field
Job Type: Full-Time
Hours: 40+ hours per week, with overtime, shutdown and turnaround opportunities
Position Summary
Prism Industrial Services Inc. is looking for an experienced B-Pressure Welder / Fabricator to join our team for a combination of shop fabrication and field work throughout Calgary and surrounding areas.
This is not strictly a production welding position. We are looking for a well-rounded tradesperson who can take a piping assembly from material preparation and fit-up through welding and final completion, and who is equally comfortable working independently in the field or as part of a fabrication team in the shop.
A major focus of this position is stainless steel process piping. The successful candidate must be highly proficient with GTAW on P-No. 8 stainless steel, including thin-wall material down to approximately 0.065" wall tubing as well as heavier-wall piping up to Schedule 80.
The ideal candidate is a quality-first welder who can also fit, understands pressure piping fabrication, and is comfortable working on everything from precision stainless fabrication to carbon steel industrial piping.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform GTAW welding on P-No. 8 stainless steel piping and tubing, ranging from approximately 0.065" wall through Schedule 80.
- Produce high-quality stainless steel welds using proper purging, fit-up, cleanliness and heat-control practices.
- Perform GMAW welding on P-No. 8 stainless steel for applicable fabrication work.
- Perform SMAW, GMAW and FCAW welding on P-No. 1 carbon steel piping and fabrication.
- Complete pressure piping welds requiring VT, PT, MT, RT and/or other NDE, depending on project requirements.
- Perform welds to applicable ASME Section IX qualified welding procedures and project requirements.
- Fabricate piping systems in accordance with applicable requirements of ASME B31.1 and B31.3.
- Fit piping, fittings, flanges, valves and fabricated components prior to welding.
- Lay out, measure, cut, bevel, prep and assemble piping components from drawings and field measurements.
- Produce accurate, clean and consistent fabrication with minimal rework.
- Read and interpret isometric drawings, fabrication drawings, P&IDs;, weld symbols and project specifications.
- Verify dimensions, orientation and fit-up prior to welding.
- Perform both shop fabrication and field installation/repair work.
- Work independently on smaller field assignments when required.
- Support shutdowns, turnarounds and outage work, including overtime and modified schedules when required.
- Assist with general fabrication and multidisciplinary industrial work when required.
- Maintain welding equipment, leads, torches and associated tools in positive working condition.
- Follow company quality procedures, WPS requirements,
inspection hold points and project documentation requirements.
- Maintain a clean, organized and safe work area.
Required Qualifications
- Alberta Journeyperson Welder / Red Seal Welder.
- Valid Alberta B-Pressure Welder Certificate or ability to obtain/renew applicable performance qualifications.
- Strong demonstrated proficiency with GTAW stainless steel welding.
- Comfortable welding stainless steel across a broad range of wall thicknesses, including thin-wall tubing and Schedule 5/10 piping through heavier Schedule 40/80 piping.
- Strong understanding of stainless steel purge welding techniques and contamination control.
- Proficient with GMAW stainless steel welding.
- Proficient with SMAW and GMAW/FCAW carbon steel welding.
- Strong pipe fitting and fabrication abilities.
- Capable of producing high-quality welds from your own fit-up.
- Able to read and work from piping isometrics, fabrication drawings and engineered drawings.
- Familiarity with pressure piping fabrication and ASME B31.1/B31.3 work.
- Understanding of weld quality requirements and common NDE methods.
- Able to work in both shop and field environments.
- Valid driver's licence and reliable transportation.
- Willing and able to work overtime, weekends, shutdowns and turnaround schedules when required.
Preferred Qualifications & Experience The following would be considered assets:
- Multiple current ABSA performance qualification tickets.
- Experience with stainless steel process piping systems.
- Experience with food & beverage, pharmaceutical, compressed air, process or other sanitary/high-purity piping systems.
- Experience with thin-wall stainless tubing.
- Experience with GTAW root / SMAW fill and cap pressure piping.
- CWB welding qualifications.
- Strong pipe fitting and layout experience.
- Experience performing field measurements and fabricating from field dimensions.
- Experience working on industrial shutdowns and turnarounds.
- Current safety certifications such as CSTS/CSO, WHMIS, Fall Protection, AWP and Confined Space.
What We're Looking For We are looking for more than someone who can pass a weld test.
The right candidate should be able to fit, fabricate and weld, understand how a complete piping assembly goes together, recognize problems before they become rework, and consistently take pride in the finished product.
You should be comfortable moving between precision stainless fabrication in the shop and industrial field work as project requirements change.
Quality is important to us.
Our work regularly involves engineered pressure piping, documented material traceability, inspection and NDE requirements, so attention to detail and following established procedures are essential.
Work Environment & Schedule
This is a full-time position with 40+ hours per week.
Work will include a combination of:
- Calgary shop fabrication
- Local and regional field work
- Industrial facilities
- Pressure piping installation and repair
- Shutdown and turnaround work
- Scheduled and unscheduled overtime
- Occasional weekend and extended-hour work
The normal schedule will vary depending on active projects. Candidates must be comfortable with the flexibility that comes with industrial service and project work.
Compensation
Competitive hourly compensation based on experience, qualifications and demonstrated welding/fabrication ability.
Overtime and premium-time opportunities are available depending on project schedules.
Benefits are available in accordance with the company's benefits program.
Pre-Employment Weld Testing
Selected candidates may be required to complete a practical weld test prior to employment.
Testing may include carbon steel and/or stainless steel using processes applicable to the position.
The purpose of the test is to evaluate fit-up, preparation, welding technique, workmanship and overall weld quality, not simply possession of existing tickets.
