About Working Gear Clothing Society

Working Gear Clothing Society is a registered Canadian charity that helps people overcome barriers to employment by providing free workwear, personal protective equipment, interview clothing, and other employment-related support.

Working in partnership with more than 180 referral agencies throughout the Lower Mainland, Working Gear helps more than 2,000 people each year enter or re-enter the workforce with confidence, dignity, and the equipment they need to succeed.

Board of Directors

Working Gear’s Board of Directors provides governance, fiduciary oversight, and strategic direction for the Society. Directors bring varied skills and perspectives—including governance, policy, fundraising, donor and government relations, human resources, legal, communications, community partnerships, and finance-to advance Working Gear’s mission and long-term sustainability.

Directors are expected to act in the best interests of the Society and demonstrate values aligned with Working Gear’s vision, purpose, and core commitments.

About the Opportunity

Working Gear is seeking thoughtful, community-minded leaders to join its volunteer Board of Directors for the 2026–2028 term. New directors will help provide strong governance, strategic guidance, and community leadership as Working Gear expands its impact and strengthens its long-term sustainability.

We welcome applicants with experience in the charitable, public, private, labour, or community sectors. We are particularly interested in people who can contribute expertise in fundraising and philanthropy, government relations, human resources, communications, policy, community partnerships, governance, or organizational growth.

This is a volunteer governance position.

Key Responsibilities

As a member of the Board of Directors, you will:

- Champion Working Gear’s mission, vision, values,



and commitments.
- Fulfill the fiduciary responsibilities of a director and act in the best interests of the Society.
- Contribute to the Society’s strategic direction, organizational priorities, and long-term sustainability.
- Review Board materials, attend meetings prepared, ask thoughtful questions, and participate constructively in decisions.
- Provide governance oversight of organizational performance, risk, finances, policies, and regulatory obligations.
- Contribute to the Board’s support and evaluation of the Executive Director while maintaining an appropriate distinction between governance and operational management.
- Participate in at least one Board committee or focused area of work, depending on the Society’s needs and the director’s experience.
- Serve as an ambassador for Working Gear by strengthening relationships, promoting its mission, and supporting fundraising and partnership development.
- Stay informed about emerging trends, risks, and opportunities affecting Working Gear and the charitable and nonprofit sector.
- Respect confidentiality, disclose conflicts of interest, and uphold high standards of ethical governance.

Time Commitment

- Monthly Board meetings and preparation.
- Participation in periodic committee meetings or project work.
- Approximately four to eight hours per month, with occasional additional time during strategic planning, recruitment, or major initiatives.




- Attendance at the Society’s Annual General Meeting and occasional Working Gear events.

Term We are seeking directors who can commit to a two-year term, subject to the Society’s bylaws and governance processes.

Qualifications and Experience The ideal candidate will bring:

- Leadership, professional, volunteer, community, or lived experience that would strengthen the Board’s collective judgment and perspective.
- An understanding of governance and fiduciary responsibility, or a willingness to learn.
- Sound judgment, integrity, curiosity, and a collaborative approach.
- The ability to think strategically while remaining grounded in Working Gear’s mission and the needs of the communities it serves.
- Solid communication and relationship-building skills.
- A willingness to actively support fundraising, partnerships, advocacy, or community awareness.
- Experience in fundraising and philanthropy, government relations, human resources, communications, policy, community partnerships, governance, or organizational growth is an asset.
- Previous Board experience is welcome but not required.
